Egypt targets 14 million tourists
Posted Monday, February 8 2010 at 20:15
In Summary

  • Tourism accounts for about 11 per cent of Egypt's gross domestic product
  • About 12.5 million tourists visited Egypt in 2009

Egypt's tourism earnings, a key source of foreign exchange, dipped just 2.1 per cent last year thanks to an upswing in Russian and British arrivals and may rise significantly in 2010, the tourism minister said on Monday.
Tourism, which accounts for about 11 per cent of Egypt's gross domestic product, was hit hard by the global economic crisis early in the year -- revenues were down 13.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2009. However, officials and analysts gradually revised their outlooks up as the season progressed.
"We have seen proper signs of recovery. Since September we've been having constant growth," Zoheir Garrana said at a news conference in Cairo.
"We hope that 2010, though I still believe it will be a very difficult year, will have significant growth."

Tourists, attracted by Egypt's Red Sea resorts and Pharaonic ruins, are a major source of foreign currency, alongside Suez Canal receipts, remittances from Egyptian expatriates and natural gas exports.
While early indicators suggested tourist arrivals and revenues would tumble as much as 20 per cent, final figures showed a 2.1 per cent drop in revenue to $10.8 billion and a 2.3 per cent decline in arrivals, Garrana said.
About 12.5 million tourists visited Egypt in 2009, down from 12.8 million a year earlier, ministry figures showed.
"It was better than what I expected," Mr Garrana told reporters when asked for his reaction to the 2009 numbers.
The financial crisis and the loss of jobs it caused in Egypt's main source markets, such as Britain and France, were the primary cause of the dip, followed by fears of the H1N1 virus, he said.
With many economies showing signs of recovery, Egypt aims to attract 14 million tourists and bring in revenues of $11.5 billion in 2010, he said.

If our tourism Board is smart enough, then it should go for agreements on packages with Egypt since they don't have wildlife and it would make more sense to combine the pyramid, historical sites, beaches and deserts with wildlife and Mountain trakking. Wake up TTB now!

Tourism into Tanzanian parks is very expensive, no wonder most tourists end up in Kenya. Kiingilio Serengeti is 50 USD, per person. If you go to Zanzibar, almost everything is paid in USD. Even a taxi. Unless we reduce dramatically the absurd prices, we won't benefit much from the natural resources we have.

which is better then for them to pay 50$ and inclusivelly killing our beautiful beast or pay 10$ and let our lions moves freely!

yes ..inabidi tuwe tunaangalia na vizazi vyetu pia.hatuwezi kujifananisha na misrikule kuna jangwa tu ...and if we make mistake we gonna loose our parks.

What I am saying is they should pay attention to competition. Our aim is to attract as many tourists as possible. If the entry prices to parks is reduced, perhaps most will stay longer in TZ and pump in that needed extra cash. Most end up staying a few days and leave, let us remember that not only park prices, but also sale of several cultural artifacts, such as tingatinga etc.

Foreigner asiyeweza kulipa $50 kuingia one of the wonders of the world sio mtalii huyo ni mwizi.
