IN SUMMARY
Buoyed by recent discovery of oil in Uganda and Kenya, Dominion Tanzania Ltd, a subsidiary of international oil exploration firm Ophir Energy plc, will start drilling oil along Dar es Salaam coastal line early next year.
The firm revealed it plans to start on the deep water exploration well (Alpha) in Block 7 off Temeke district once an environmental and social impact assessment it has commissioned is completed.
The drilling site is 8,475 square kilometres located on the continental slope of the Indian Ocean immediately east of Dar es Salaam.
The exploration follows Dominion's acquisition last December of interests in the Block 7 from Mubadala Oil & Gas company for $20 million.
According to Dr Nicholas Cooper, chief executive officer of Ophir Energy plc, a 2010 competent report prepared by Energy Resource Consultants Ltd stated that Alpha had a mean prospective unrisked resource of 1.104 billion barrels of oil or 7.069 trillion cubic feet of gas.
Ophir is so optimistic about the commercial viability of the discoveries that it is also planning a two-train onshore liquefied natural gas facility in Tanzania.
