Wakiso
Court has fined the woman who accused Mulago Hospital of stealing twins she had allegedly sired at the facility. Claire Nuru Namatovu admitted that she had faked a pregnancy for over nine months and was found guilty of giving false information to a person employed with public service.
Nsangi Magistrate's Court in Wakiso District passed the ruling on Friday and fined her Shs300,000. Had she failed to pay the fine, she faced a 12-month prison sentence.
In court, Namatovu, who is in her late thirties, looked remorseful, at one point kneeling and breaking into tears after the judgement was read.
In giving her the option for a fine, court considered the fact that Namatovu had made a quick confession and had four children to take care of. Namatovu's drama began on January 7 when she sent home a pair of dolls for burial claiming they were a product of a stillbirth at Mulago.
Medical examinations
She, however, failed to produce documents to prove delivery or presence in the hospital. When a medical examination was carried out later, it was found that Namatovu lacked signs of recent birth or pregnancy.
Namatovu's last born is 12 years. When news spread about her shenanigans, residents of Nanziga Village, where Namatovu resides, attempted to lynch her but local officials came to her rescue.
The area LC chairman, Mr Geoffrey Ssebagala, said the community was convinced Namatovu was expecting considering that she always wore baggy clothes. Her husband, Mr Francis Nkugwa, earlier told Daily Monitor he would divorce his wife if it is established that she was lying about her pregnancy. The motive of a mother of four faking a pregnancy still remains unknown.
