Position summary
WRI (www.wri.org) is a leading environmental research institute. Our Markets & Enterprise Program focuses on the intersection between the private sector and the environment and provides groundbreaking research for investors and companies to help solve the earth's most pressing environmental problems.

We seek to fill the full-time staff position of Director of Capital Markets Research. The Director plays a key role in the Markets & Enterprise Program and leads a team and a body of work that focuses on the practices of investors, capital markets and corporations. The work builds on WRI's strong track record in this area and is an important and growing part of the Institute. It will make a significant contribution to understanding the implications of environmental trends for investors and corporations alike and will have significant positive impacts for protecting the environment.

The Director develops the research and communications strategy and implements a portfolio of projects. S/he will help refine a 5-year strategic plan that sets priorities and guides the Program's initiatives on capital markets and corporate environmental performance. The work builds on ongoing efforts, which focus on embedding environmental risks and opportunities into financial analysis and investment decisions, scaling up capital formation around low-carbon technology solutions to climate change, and greening corporate supply chains. WRI has pioneered methodologies that allow environmental issues to be incorporated into security analysis and portfolio management. WRI is also working to help financial and industrial companies to implement new policies and commitments on environmental issues.

The Director will also guide a team of 5-7 associates and analysts. This research team works in partnership with global financial institutions, and the Director helps to develop and manage those relationships. S/he will also play a leading role in communicating the results of the work, including presentations, media relations, and increasing the visibility of the Markets & Enterprise Program.

This position reports to the Program Director of the Markets & Enterprise Program.

Major responsibilities

  • Help solve environmental problems by developing practical, applied research that can be used by investors and corporations.
  • Play a leading role in setting WRI's strategic direction in this area.
  • Oversee and implement a body of research projects and related activities. Work closely with associates and analysts to produce analyses of relevant environmental and financial issues, including quantitative analyses and assessments of environmental trends and their impact on investment opportunities.
  • Communicate the results of our work widely and authoritatively based on a strategy that will yield the broadest and most effective uptake of our findings.
  • Raise funds for the work, including development of successful grant proposals for various types of funders, such as foundations, government agencies, and individuals. Develop and manage funder relationships.
  • Manage budgets and handle project administration.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 8 years of work experience that must include private sector experience in finance and investment. Experience with equity analysis and/or fund management is preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in or experience with environmental issues.
  • Active network of contacts in the financial community and the private sector in general.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and producing research. Must be able to develop and guide quantitative financial analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in an organized, clear, and articulate manner (in English).
  • Proven track record in business development and/or fundraising.
  • Graduate degree in business, finance, or economics preferred. Other academic disciplines may be suitable contingent upon strong work experience in the private sector. Additional studies related to the environment are an advantage.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and compellingly to a wide range of audiences both verbally and in writing.
  • Results focused, with a strong team orientation, and the ability to work well under pressure toward a tight deadline.

Salary and benefits
WRI offers a compensation package that includes salary, pension plan contribution and potential bonus, which together are in the range of $84K to $110K. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
