Dar police nab 125 suspects

DAILY NEWS Reporter, 30th March 2009 @ 11:25

Police in Dar es Salaam have arrested 251 suspects and collected over 350m/- in fines from vehicles seized for breaking road safety rules in the last three months. Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Mr Suleiman Kova, told reporters yesterday that police also impounded five guns (SMG), 11 pistols, 59 pellets of narcotic drugs, one tonne of Marijuana and 1,000 litres of illicit liquor (gongo).

Mr Kova said 8,263 vehicles including 5,539 commuter buses were also impounded by the police and their drivers were charged for breaking road regulations and fined 349,660,000m/-. The Commander said the suspects were arraigned to court with some of the cases still in progress, while others had already been convicted. He cautioned people who own firearms legally not to use them for committing crimes.

Mr Kova said an assessment for the past three months showed that police had managed to maintain peace and order in the city, but appealed to Dar es Salaam residents to co-operate with law enforcers to further improve the situation. He said he had started visiting various places in the city, to have audience with 'wananchi' and that he would also visit police stations to talk with cops.
