CCM leads in random opinion poll
AN opinion poll survey carried out by the Tanzania Citizens Information Bureau (TCIB) has shown that the ruling CCM enjoyed 50 per cent support of people above 40 year of age, while the young generation supported different opposition parties.
The 13-day random sampling conducted in 15 different regions in Tanzania Mainland focused on two basic questions.
Presenting the findings, the researcher, Dr Vincent Leyaro, said the survey was conducted between September 27 and October 10, this year, reaching a total of 3,047 people in two villages in only one constituency in every region.
"Among interviewed people, 31.6 per cent admitted neither in support or affiliated to any of the political parties, while 18.3 per cent agreed to be members of CCM, 15.6 per cent members of Chadema and 12 are members and supporters of CUF," reads part of the report.
The survey took another dimension seeking to establish whether all particular party members were satisfied with the nomination of individual party's presidential candidacy and establish the degree of support that candidate enjoyed among fellow members.
In other words, the survey intended to find out whether a member from a different party could vote for a candidate from a different party. According to the survey the answer is Yes.
For example, for CCM it was established that 81 per cent of interviewed CCM members said they would vote for the party's candidate, President Jakaya Kikwete, while two per cent of Chadema members said would vote Mr Kikwete and 48 per cent of CUF members also said would support President Kikwete.
As for Chadema, 90 per cent of its members said they would vote for Dr Slaa while 15 per cent of CCM members said they would vote for Dr Slaa and five per cent of CUF members would support Chadema's candidate.
As for the CUF, the research established that 38 per cent of its members would go for Prof Lipumba, two per cent of CCM members would vote for him and one per cent of Chadema party members would vote for Prof Lipumba.
Regions covered are Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Iringa Kagera, Kilimanjaro, Lindi, Mara, Manyara and Mbeya. Others are Morogoro, Mwanza, Rukwa, Ruvuma and Tabora.
The level of support based on regional assessment further indicated that the three candidates for CCM, Chadema and CUF commanded support in some of the regions but performed poorly in other regions.
For example, Chadema enjoys strong support in Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Manyara, with unimpressive support in Lindi, Morogoro, Ruvuma and Tabora. The report says CCM presidential candidate commands support in Dodoma, Morogoro, Tabora and Ruvuma, while CUF presidential candidate enjoys strong support in Lindi, Dar es Salaam and Tabora.
The survey concluded on three basic points. One, the unveiled research findings were just opinion poll not necessarily in every respect an outright reflection of the final election results slated for October 31st, this year.
Secondly, repeated exercise of opinion poll survey by different independent research organizations will help make election prediction much closer to reality of things to happen.
Lastly, the findings can serve as a wake-up call to candidates to make them work hard and make a difference in areas of weakness for the best performance in the remaining two weeks of election campaigns," concludes the report.
