When the disease was first reported in China, the experts understood little about the characteristics of the disease. They knew that the disease was very infectious and it kills people. But that was almost about it. Therefore, for many people it was a mysterious disease and a perfect example for making sensational headlines and stories.

Probably, the media didn’t perform well in informing the masses. However, you shouldn’t chastise the media for not reporting the fundamentals. For, that isn’t the work of the media to educate you. Besides, many people don’t tune to the media to learn, but rather to confirm their own beliefs or to be entertained. Other organizations such as churches, mosques, schools, government agencies etc. are responsible for your information wellbeing. So, if you want to lay blames, the media is just your scapegoat. The media can’t change you. Your pastor, Imam, or president can.

Take for example Mch. Gwajima. He once said that 5G is the source of CORONA-19. Unfortunately, that wasn’t true. But his gullible followers believed him. So, do you think a person who takes Gwajima seriously will accept information from media outlets that contradict his belief? Rarely. The point I want to draw home here is that media can play an important function in the society. However, you must be a good and regular listener who accepts the developments of stories. For instance, the development of covid-19 and how it impacts aging population in developed countries such as the US and the UK has been out there for more than 5 months.

However, for Tanzanians who want to make a good story about their country, new and educational information about covid-19 doesn’t matter to them. For, they want to bash the west even though they are in a deep slumber of ignorance. In terms of mortality cases, Brazil is second to the United and it is in the same geographic latitudes as Tanzania. The question is why don’t we ask Brazilians to copy from Tanzania? I think that this isn’t the story you want to make.

With regard to vaccine, there’s a truth that the vaccine for covid-19 has been developed quickly. However, there is a couple points to be made for this rapid development. To begin with, the technology used for this vaccine is quite new. That’s a game changer here. For instance, 20 years ago, it took you two weeks to send a mail message from DSM to Mwanza. Today, you can send the same message within a second. So, the use of technology has improved the way we run business in many areas including vaccine development. Furthermore, governments and organizations have invested a lot of money in the vaccine development. This type of investment has not been seen before. If the same type of investment has been applied in other diseases, probably we would have a different story to tell. So, instead of bashing, I think we, Tanzanians, should applaud and support these initiatives because our economy is tied to the wellbeing of other citizens of the world. If they don’t come to visit our country we suffer. So whatever invention they take to improve their own situation is good for them and also for us. There’s no point to engage in conspiracy theories.

Hakuna waandishi jasiri kufanya uchunguzi wa kina na kuandika. Kuna baadhi waliandika kutoka Europe few months now lakini kwa sababu Tanzania ipo dunia ya tatu interest ni ndogo. Utafika wakati 2/3 years from now wataandika what actually happened in Tanzania. Hivi sasa wanasema hakuna vifo kwa sababu majority population ya Tanzania wengi ni under 50 years.
