AT least four Cabinet ministers and two regional commissioners have reportedly lost according to latest results of the general elections held on Sunday.

On the ‘fallen' list are also former deputy ministers and MPs in the previous Union Parliament. Minister of State in the Vice-President's Office (Environment), Dr Batilda Burian (Arusha Urban) and Home Affairs Minister Lawrence Masha (Nyamagana) have lost to the Opposition.

Mr Masha lost by a margin of 10,000 votes. Both lost to opponents from Chadema. Others are Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (Policy, Co-ordination and Parliamentary Affairs) Philip Marmo (Mbulu) and Industry, Trade and Marketing Minister Dr Mary Nagu (Hanang).

The results are, however, uncertain, following some electoral dispute. Mr Marmo has reportedly failed to accept defeat while in Hanang, where Dr Nagu battled it out with Ms Rose Kamili of Chadema, results were uncertain by Monday evening.

Reports from Hanang say that the minister has filed for a vote recount in one ward. But even if she wins, it would be by a very low margin. The recount could also possibly turn around the results in her opponent's favour.

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Monica Mbega lost to Chadema in Iringa Urban, while Iringa Regional Commissioner Mohamed Abdulaziz was beaten by his CUF opponent in Lindi Urban.

Other prominent figures who lost, according to the results are former Energy and Minerals Minister and former Rombo MP, Mr Basil Mramba, former Industry, Trade and Marketing Minister Anthony Diallo (Ilemela) and former Cabinet minister and Speaker of the African Parliament, Ms Gertrude Mongela (Ukerewe). All also lost to Chadema opponents.

Meanwhile, several other Cabinet ministers, MPs in the previous House and other prominent figures in the government retained their seats by winning comfortably in their constituencies.

They include Agriculture, Co-operatives and Food Security Minister Stephen Wasira, Information, Culture and Sports Minister George Mkuchika and former Speaker, Mr Samuel Sitta.

The result trend on Monday indicated continuation of the stiff battle between the ruling CCM and Chadema, all of which had mixed fortunes in the presidential, parliamentary and councillorship races in a number of constituencies, with both parties and their candidates getting good results in the early vote count.

Political analysts, however, point to an ultimate CCM victory, in all races, based on the fact that they fielded candidates in all 239 constituencies. The ruling party's victory will, however, fall little short of the landslide they had hoped to register.

The Opposition numbers in parliament will probably swell, according to these results, which would be a challenge to the frontbenchers.

From Bukoba, Meddy Mulisa reports that Ambassador Khamis Sued Kagasheki has successfully retained his Bukoba Urban seat, scooping over 18,000 votes edging his closest challenger, Mr Wilfred Lwakatare of Chadema who garnered 13,800 votes.

From Kilimanjaro, Amina Juma reports that Education and Vocational Training Minister, Prof Jumanne Maghembe, has won in Mwanga, with 20, 730 votes in his kit. He was followed by Mr Shafii Msuya of Chadema who got 4,719.

In Moshi town Chadema parliamentary candidate, Mr Philemon Ndesamburo was declared the winner with 28,697 votes against Mr Alfred Salakana of Chadema who got 16,792 votes.
In Hai constituency, Chadema National Chairman Freeman Mbowe defeated his opponent from CCM, Mr Fuya Kimbita, scooping 27,961 votes against 22,121 earned by Mr Kimbita.

Meanwhile, TLP National Chairman and former Cabinet Minister in the second phase government, Mr Augustine Mrema, won the Vunjo seat, defeating his challengers, Mr John Mrema (Chadema) and Mr Crispin Meela (CCM) by a large margin.

In Moshi Rural constituency, the Deputy Minister for Trade, Industries and Marketing, Dr Cyril Chami, succeeded in defending his parliamentary seat after defeating Mr Anthony Komu of Chadema.

Meanwhile, results for Ukonga, Segerea and Ilala in Dar es Salaam Region will be announced later today. Ilala Returning Officer Mr Gabriel Fuime attributed the delay in announcing the results to misplaced election result booklets compiled at polling centres.

He did not rule out "elements of negligence among election supervisors.'' Mr Fuime also attributed the delay to a number of ballot boxes, yet to be collected from some wards in Ukonga and Segerea.

"It has been a hectic time to locate misplaced booklets, "he said He said he was going to meet National Electoral Commission (NEC) officials to determine the verdict for areas
where the booklets are missing.
