"We should not lessen our efforts to get the money we really need, but it would be more appropriate for us to spend time in the villages showing the people how to bring about development through their own efforts rather than going on so many long and expensive journeys abroad in search of development money. This is the real way to bring development to everybody in the country."

- The Arusha Declaration, 1967

1967!!!!...............................................................................................

2010???

JK vs JKN?

Jakaya Kikwete vs Juma Kassim Nature? still Juma Kassim Nature kamuacha mbali sana Kikwete, kila mwaka anatoa vibao kashinda mpaka tuzo za Africa!

There is now way you can compare Kikwete and Nyerere!

"[A] man is developing himself when he grows, or earns, enough to provide decent conditions for himself and his family; he is not being developed if someone gives him these things."
Julius Kambarage Nyerere, from his book Uhuru na Maendeleo (Freedom and Development), 1973.

"And there is in Tanzania a fantastic amount of talk about getting money from outside. Our Government, and different groups of our leaders, never stop thinking about methods of getting finance from abroad. And if we get some money or even if we just get a promise of it, our newspapers, our radio, and our leaders, all advertise the fact in order that every person shall know that salvation is coming, or is on the way. If we receive a gift we announce it, if we receive a loan we announce it, if we get a new factory we announce it – and always loudly. In the same way, when we get a promise of a gift, a loan, or a new industry, we make an announcement of the promise. Even when we have merely started discussions with a foreign government or institution for a gift, a loan, or a new industry, we make an announcement – even though we do not know the outcome of the discussions. Why do we do all this?" - Arusha Declaration, 1967

Tunaendelea

It is stupid to rely on money as the major instrument of development when we know only too well that our country is poor. It is equally stupid, indeed it is even more stupid, for us to imagine that we shall rid ourselves of our poverty through foreign financial assistance rather than our own financial resources- Arusha Declaration, 1967

"We'll be waiting in Tanzania for businessmen who want to benefit from the quota and customs-free trade opportunities my country offers with both the United States and the European Union" - JK

"We're going to meet with both the president and the prime minister, and we're going to sign around four or five agreements. I think that during my visit our relations will see some serious development. And I'm very much looking forward to seeing İstanbul" - JK

"Tanzania is strong in the mining sector. We have gold, cobalt, iron... We have every mineral that exists on earth. Tanzania has every kind of mine, and there are plenty of them. Uranium, gold, diamond, coal, nickel... Everything is here. Mining is an area in which there really is great opportunity" - JK

"I know Turkey is strong in the textile industry. We produce a lot of cotton, for example, but it needs to be processed. Turkish businesspeople can come and invest in the textile sector here, producing all sorts of textiles. All they need to do is come and prepare products for sale" - JK

"We have plenty of raw materials, agricultural raw materials...These are among the other areas Turks may be interested in investing in. You can conduct any kind of agriculture in Tanzania. We have the asset of 46 million of hectares of agricultural area, but only 5 million hectares are being utilized now. … If we could get at least another 5 million hectares in use, [this would be a major opportunity]" - JK

"There are big opportunities in the tourism sector. We have great parks and beaches here -- what is required is more hotels and more operating businesses" - JK

it seems Kikwete is all about "me" whereas JKN was all about "the people"

but here lies somewhat the fallacy of the question posed: are the two visions really competing with each other?

LOL!

I am tired of reading his exploration routes.

Yaani akina January Makamba ndio wana post hizi safari zake kama quotes??

Quotes are due to your own theories, beliefs and principles, in short quotes show that who you are. Jk hana anachokiamini wala hatujui anaamini nini.

akina Kikwete ndio wanatuletea quotes kama hizi

''Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling''

au

"One of the greatest things about books is sometimes there are some fantastic pictures''-George W Bush

Mbavu zangu!

zinatosha, zinatosha, please!

Few things to consider, any form of socialism doesn't work. Mwalimu needs a lot of credit though because his version of ujamaa didn't improve maendeleo ya nchi but it definitely enforced amani, upendo, na umoja wa watanzania. Ujamaa wa Urusi was more interested in keeping the power to themselves and controlled means of uchumi as a tool to oppress people rather than to be shared with people. Ujamaa wetu under Mwalimu was truly for the people. Bahati mbaya tu, ujamaa kama mfumo wa serikali have proven to fail. People need right incentives to wake up and work everyday. 70s oil crisis, and Kagera war did create setbacks but themselves aren't sufficient reasons for failure of ujamaa.

During Mwalimu's time, bongo received most aid from China than any African country. Despite of cold war, Mwalimu was able to enjoy good relationship with US--which was unheard off. And that is a testimony of his good leadership.

Kikwete on the other hand, I personally like the fact that he travels and meet different leaders. Global economy is more intertwined than ever. The more bilateral trade agreements you made, the more prosperous is your country. The age of being isolated are over, and Jakaya is making enormous efforts to create a network of different partners that will be appreciated later after he is gone. But he has incredibly big and ineffective goverment, filled with incompetent people (Mustafa Mkullo kwa mfano). And bunge that is spend so much time bickering about Richmond rather than improving elimu, afya, and other ishu muhimu. I think bunge need to raise the level of debate, and that will happen only if young people humu ndani will be willing kutoka kwenye kazi zao nzuri huko ughaibuni na kwenda kugombea ubunge nyumbani.

watu warudi vipi hiwapo wajamaa wanapinga dual citizenship ni pathetics tuu.

Na kwa nini kusafiri kila siku badala ya kukaa na kusimamia maendeleo yako. ana kazi ya kujenga nchi na si kujengewa nchi na sijui waturuki ambao ni njaa tu if you ask me. Honestly what can they offer us.

How right is a white man umaskini ni tabia?

Safi MKJJ,

What a strong masage with deep thought about our problems this old man was thinking in the few years after independence!
Halafu tunamdharau huyu mzee kama alitulostisha? I dont think so kwasababu sasa hivi ndio tumelost.
