In Summary: Chadema says it will not recognise the president elected at what it says were fraudulent elections
Chama Cha Demokrasia Na Maendeleo on Monday announced that it would not to recognise President Jakaya Kikwete as a President because of several weaknesses that were recorded during the past general election.
The former Chadema Presidential candidate, Dr Wilbrod Slaa told the Press that President Kikwete was the product of fabricated election results, which Chadema does not recognise.
Dr Slaa added that the Presidential results were not allowed to be questioned anywhere after being released by the National Electoral Commission and that his party has no grounds to say anything in the line of the law.
"I said this before NEC announced the results and we wrote to them trying to explain our complaints but they did not even respond, therefore the only way was to reject the results and not to recognise the President," said Dr Slaa.
According to Dr Slaa, Chadema has decided not to recognise President Kikwete because the results were fabricated and thus there was no reason to accept him as a President.
The former Karatu MP added that it was difficult to accept election results which were recorded without adhering to the principles of democracy.
Another reason behind rejecting the results and not recognising President Kikwete is that the general election was not free and fair.
"The whole election process was not conducted under conducive environments, we have been warning NEC on this matter but no important measures have been taken on the matter," said Dr Slaa.
According to Dr Slaa, the matter has been officially handed over to the party (Chadema) so that important measures can be taken for future betterment of wananchi.
"I am using this opportunity to tell all Tanzanians that I was not satisfied by the results and therefore I do not recognize Mr Jakaya Kikwete as a President, I want Tanzanians to understand this," said Dr Slaa.
But, when reached for the comments, the Attorney General, Judge Fredrick Werema said the new election Act demands that all complaints be filed in court.
"I think the law is open on all complaints about election issues, everything is supposed to be filed in court," said the AG.
On the Chadema's stand over President Kikwete's win, Judge Werema said Chadema's decision was ‘nonsense'. (Ni mawazo na msimamo wa kijinga na kipumbavu kutomkubali Rais)
Commenting to the matter, the Chadema national chairman, Mr Freeman Mbowe said the party will pressurise for the independence committee to probe the violation of elections principles all over the country.
