Dr Peter Kafumu
CHADEMA has called for the Igunga returning officer to disqualify the CCM candidate, Dr Peter Kafumu, from contesting for the upcoming by elections on grounds that his party has violated elections ethics and regulations.
The CHADEMA Director for Legal and Constitution Affairs, Mr Tundu Lissu, told reporters here on Saturday that the candidate should not contest since his party allowed its officials to campaign while armed.
Mr Lissu said it is illegal for anyone to be armed while participating in political campaigns and called on security organs to act tough on such acts.
He blamed the police for taking no action against Mr Aden Rage who addressed a campaign rally on Thursday while armed with a pistol.
"CCM MPs are now moving around with pistols in the Igunga campaigns and this is dangerous. We have already reported the matter to the Igunga Returning Officer, Mr Protase Magayane, for his action," he said.
The ongoing campaigns have been marred by acts of violence allegedly instigated by supporters of CHADEMA and CCM and the recent allegations of campaigners carrying firearms only makes matters worse.
Recently the MP for Sumbawanga Urban, Mr Aeshi Hillally and Esther Bulaya (CCM-special seats) were allegedly ambushed at a rest house popular with CHADEMA supporters at Mwanzuki Road with the aim of torching CCM's campaign vehicle.
Chaos ensued as bullets were fired soon after CHADEMA security men were tipped-off of the situation and reacted.
Eye witnesses told reporters that the two MPs decided to run away to save their lives but their vehicles were already stoned by suspected CHADEMA security men.
Addressing press conferences at different times on Saturday, both CCM and CHADEMA gave confusing statements as they came to the defence of their supporters following the incident.
The CCM Campaign Manager, Mr Mwigulu Mchemba, said Ms Bulaya and Mr Hillary
were attacked by CHADEMA supporters while driving back to their guest house while CUF through Mr Lissu and the CHADEMA campaign Manager, Mr Mwita Waitara said the accused actually wanted to sabotage their opponent's campaign efforts.
Commenting of the incidents, police hace said that they are aware of the incidents and that investigations are ongoing.
Mr Isaya Mungullu from the police's Criminal Investigations Department said: "We are aware of the incidents and we have questioned about ten people in connection with the matter, including the two MPs, Ester Bulaya and Aeshi Hillary."
He also said that they have recovered two bullet shells, noting that the bullets were fired from a pistol of 9mm make and they were trying to establish the owner of the weapon.
On the issue of MP Rage, he said the Police have questioned him and the matter would be forwarded to higher authorities for further action.
"We have questioned him to establish grounds that led him to carry the gun during the campaign and we will then hand over the matter to our lawyers for more legal action," he said.
The police assured residents of Igunga that they are on top of things and that peace and tranquillity will be maintained throughout the campaigns and on polling day until the results are announced.
