Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) will take legal action against its former Mbeya regional chairman, Sambwee Shitambala, if ongoing investigations reveal that he sabotaged the party's campaigns in Mbeya Rural constituency in the 2010 parliamentary elections.
Shitambala defected to CCM and was handed the party's membership card by President Jakaya Kikwete in a ceremony held in Dodoma on Friday, despite attempts by Chadema secretary Dr Wilbroad Slaa to restore him to his post.
The party's regional secretary, Eddo Mwamalala, told journalists that the former regional chief was being investigated for bribery and misconduct following his last-minute withdrawal from the race, thus paving the way for the CCM candidate's victory.
Chadema claims that CCM offered Shitambala 400m/- in order to withdraw his candidacy.
Mwamalala said his office had completed its investigation into the allegations and was waiting for the party's head office to conclude its findings before deciding on the next move.
“Our party has got its own lawyers. If it is proved that he accepted a bribe, the party will decide what to do with him,” said the regional secretary.
He added that Shitambala’s defection to CCM would not give him immunity from prosecution.
He explained that although Shitambala had a constitutional right to join any political party, he owed Mbeya Rural constituents an apology for betraying their trust in him.
The Chadema official also warned its former regional chief against using any party property still in his possession, including the party's official stamp, membership cards, and the Chadema flag.
