Caroline Mwatha: Missing Dandora human rights activist found dead

Caroline Mwatha, a human rights activist from Dandora who went missing last week, has been found dead.

The body of Ms. Mwatha was found at City Mortuary in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon.

Sources have told Citizen Digital that the woman’s body was booked at the morgue by a private citizen at around 4am Tuesday.

Ms. Mwatha is reported to have gone missing on Wednesday, February 6 with her disappearance being reported at Buru Buru Police Station on Friday, February 8.

According to her friends, she was last seen at her home in Dandora on Wednesday morning, but since then her phone has remained off with her whereabouts still unknown.

Caroline Mwatha was a founder member and case worker with Dandora Community Social Justice Centre, which has been documenting, lobbying and calling for police professionalism, public accountability and an end to extra judicial killings.

Amnesty International had raised the alarm over her disappearance, asking police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

“Amnesty International Kenya calls upon the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and National Police Service to thoroughly investigate Carol’s disappearance, establish her whereabouts and deliver to her friends and family,” said Irũngũ Houghton, Amnesty International’s Executive Director, in a statement to newsrooms on Sunday, February 10.

Missing Kenyan rights activist found dead from botched abortion
Police say they had seen text messages of her planning the abortion with the clinic owner.


A Kenyan human rights activist who went missing a week ago has been found dead at a city mortuary after a botched abortion, police said Tuesday.

Caroline Mwatha was reported missing last week, prompting Amnesty International to raise the alarm over her disappearance, given her work lobbying against extra judicial killings by police.

A police source said that Mwatha, who was five months pregnant, had died at a clinic where she had gone for the abortion.

The owner of the clinic, and a doctor, came forward and admitted that "they took the body to the mortuary and booked her under a different name and indicated she died of diarrhoea".

The source said police had seen text messages of her planning the abortion with the clinic owner.

Police spokesman Charles Owino confirmed the death and the arrests of the doctor and clinic owner.

"We have two suspects in custody and they are the ones who led detectives to the mortuary," he said.

Abortion is illegal in Kenya unless the mother's life is in danger, however government statistics show over 400,000 abortions are carried out annually.

In November 2018 authorities banned British charity Marie Stopes International over adverts it said promoted abortion, lifting it a month later.

Marie Stopes estimates some seven women die a day in Kenya in so-called backstreet abortions.
