Zanzibar will be prosperous if it improves financial discipline, and set-up its own central Bank and currency, some legislators said when debating the 2012/2013 Zanzibar budget.

Mr Omar Ali Shehe (CUF- Chakechake), Mr Hija Hassan Hija (CUF-Kiwani), Mr Ismail Jussa Ladu (CUF-Mjimkongwe), and Mr Hamza Hassan Juma (CCM-Kwamtipura), said that the abuse of office was undermining the islands' economy.
"We still lack transparency in public offices. Expenditure lacks supporting documents and yet executives are not held accountable. It is unfair to increase taxes on commodities affecting lives of majority people while corrupt civil servants continue to embezzle public funds," Mr Hamza said.
He warned that the government risked losing public trust if it continues to be silent on improving accountability and good governance in the government particularly on how public funds are spent. Mr Ladu said that there was a lot of controversy in the Zanzibar budget, and unclear expenditures of public funds.
The Mji-Mkongwe legislator also said that the Union between Zanzibar and Tanganyika was slowing development of the islands because it gave the islands no control over currency policies. "One of the causes for inflation and rising costs of living is the devaluation of Tanzania currency.
We fall victims for no reason! It is high time we had our own central bank and currency," Mr Ladu said. The visibly charged legislator appealed to Zanzibar President Ali Mohamed Shein, his two vice presidents and ministers to stand firm for the interest of Zanzibar, saying the legislators were behind them.
The backbenchers vowed to continue demanding for Zanzibar rights in the Union as they asked other pressure groups in the islands to do the same without violence. They asked every Zanzibari to give their opinions during constitution Review Process.
