This is to say language competence or incompetence provides the first impression of the level of intelligence in a speaker, which is why oratory ability and communication skills in general have for many years been used as reliable predictors of a political candidate's electability in many countries, except Tanzania of course!

I diametrically disagree with you on this one. As much as you claim that there is a plethora of evidence that supports a strong correlation between cognitive ability and communication skills competence I can also make the same claim about the opposite, which renders your argument inconclusive. I have taken a lot of science classes where the professors could hardly communicate the material to the students, yet they were PhD. holders from some of the prestigious institutions in America and around the world. Are you telling me that some of my "esteemed" professors in college are/ were not as intelligent just because they are not very good 'talkers'? If you tell me that both (being intelligent and articulate/ eloquent) can be true at the same time, I will not dispute that. But you can't tell me that A goes with B and B can't go without A, no sir!!

You are doing an injustice to Salim Ahmed Salim by grouping him among those whose English skills are questionable. Salim is a very skilled orator, both in English and Swahili. I used to enjoy his speeches in the UN. He could give Mwalimu a run for his money.

Jasusi, I've seen Salim a couple of times on C-Span...talking about Africa and Darfur and his years as the OAU's SG.....I couldn't follow what he was saying....his diction was bad....with some grammatical errors....the guy was just rambling.....but I cut him some slack....

Ni kweli hatuhitaji exception oration kuleta maendeleo. Lakini unapokuwa katika harakati za kumobilize masses behind your ideas, kama ilivyokuwa na MLK jr, wakati wa harakati za kugombea haki za kiraia hapa Marekani, na JKN wakati wa kampeni za uhuru wetu, oration inachukua center stage. Imagine Mwungana angekuwa ndiye founding father wetu. Wengi tusingeelewa nini sababu za kupigania uhuru.

Either your measure of inteligence through oratorial skills is wrong or your understanding of inteligence is more psychological than factual. If language and communications skills were used to predict inteligence, most geniuses, including Eistein, would have failed.

Oratorial skills is an art, and even the worst perfoming student in a class can be a very good public speaker. Most Tanzanians, including JK, are very good Swahili orators as is their first language. If they have to be weighed on their communication skills, they have to be measured on what they know best, i.e. Swahili.

We are making to much of a deal of Kikwete's english, but frankly, it is good enough when accompanied with his charm, as we have seen how successful he has been in making friends.

What Kikwete should be striving for is not the Obama type oratorial skills, forget it, he will never have that. What he needs is at least four simple corrections to his leadership:

1. Stop surrounding himself with friends who knows very little on what the country needs at the momment. Most of those friends are do nothing bosses and say nothing tough to him buddies. These are not the type of team players he need now.
2. Get better economic advisors, ones with mixed eperiences, international and local. Whether they are from oposition, JF or elsewhere, it should't matter to him. Get the best ideas and sieve them to suit his policies.
3. He should treat his presidency as a company CEO, where only results matter. His management team, i.e. the cabinet, is too big, too costly and very inefficient. Change it. Why carry on doing the same thing without getting different results if you are not stupid?
4. Be serious in rewarding good perfomers and penalize the bad ones. It is the only way to make everyone accountable.

If your arguments have any merit, your examples are undermining that.

Einstein was not an orator, but he revolutionized communication with conceptual linguistic with his insighful phrases such as "the mind's eye" and countless jewels still widely quoted today.

I doubt Kikwete can even express himself eruditely in Swahili.
