British woman facing jail after allegedly having sex on Dubai beach

A British woman could be jailed for up to six years in Dubai after she was allegedly caught having sex on a beach.

The woman, said to be 30, was arrested after a police officer reportedly twice found her having sex with a British man on Jumeirah Beach.

She has reportedly been charged with having sex outside marriage, indecent behaviour in public, being drunk in public and assaulting a police officer.

She faces a jail sentence of between three months and six years in the state, one of seven that makes up the United Arab Emirates. The holidaymaker accused in connection with her arrest faces a similar sentence.

The Foreign and Commonwealth office confirmed that two British nationals were arrested on Saturday 5 July in Dubai.

A spokeswoman said: "The case is currently under investigation by the authorities in Dubai. We are providing consular assistance."

Although the woman is said to have lived in Dubai for the last three years, she could be deported from the state if she is convicted.

The FCO spokeswoman said Britain does not have a prisoner transfer agreement with Dubai, so if the woman was given a jail sentence, she would have to serve it in the state. "If she is deported, that would be part of her punishment and would be the end of the matter," she said.

The woman's employers would not comment on the situation.

The FCO's website says that public displays of affection are frowned upon in the UAE and there have been several arrests for kissing in public. Sex outside marriage is illegal, as is cohabitation, adultery and homosexual behaviour.

More than a million Britons visited the UAE in 2006 and over 100,000 British nationals live in the seven states.

Not all countries are as dirty as america and they should not be allowed to down trod on people as if they were gods ... they should learn that in this world they are some countries still sane unlike them

I thought this is talking about the man/partner-The holidaymaker accused in connection with her arrest faces a similar sentence.

How about the man? is not illegal for him to have sex on the beach? I am just curious..

It's illegal na wamesema kwenye paragraph ifuatayo:

Huyu mwanamme yupo kwenye vacation na kwa sababu wanatembea nje ya ndoa, ukizingatia kwamba Saudi Arabia hawaruhusu kufanya mapenzi mahotelini na nyumba za wageni kama ninyi si wanandoa, basi ikabidi waende ufukweni.

Halafu mwanamke ana makosa mengine -She has reportedly been charged with having sex outside marriage, indecent behaviour in public, being drunk in public and assaulting a police officer.

was she having sex with herself? or is it legal for men to have sex in public and not women? makubwa!!!!!!!

Interesting!
I thought they were just being adventurous on the beach..ila wewe unasema kwa vile hawaruhusiwi kuwa vyumbani kama si wanandoa..SAUDI ARABIA..lakini they were in Dubai.

Sijui ni lini tutabadili tabia, at least for the sake of our lovely and innocent children.

Tonga,
dont bank too much on laws.Sheria mbona zipo on adultery..umewahi kusikia nani kapelekwa mahakamani? Vilevile zipo sheria dhidi ya indecent exposure, vagabonds, unnatural offence etc.At most the more the laws, the wider the scope for corruption!!

Frankly speaking six years in some Dubai slammer for this is too much.

I am against indecent exposure which seems to be the only relevant issue here, but six years?

But indecent exposure to who, the Police, the public, to each other, or to kids? Kuna mtu alilipishwa faini hapa.

Hiyo sheria ya Michigan iko sexist, indecent exposure to the public of course.

As long as you are in a public beach and not in some private nude beach (I doubt they have those in Dubai) indecent exposure may apply.

The British couple at the centre of Dubai's 'sex on the beach' case have had their appeal against sentence adjourned until next week.
Vince Acors and Michelle Palmer are hoping to get out of jail in the Arabic state - but in appealing, they risk seeing their sentence increased.

Last month the pair were told they would serve three months in prison for being engaged in sexual activity in public.

They also face deportation and fines of more than £170 each. They were arrested on Dubai's Jumeirah beach after meeting at a champagne brunch. Michelle Palmer claimed the pair had been "just kissing and hugging".

Their lawyer insists they are not guilty and will continue protesting their innocence in court on November 25.

But it is thought that when they reach court, prosecutors may counter appeal and claim the couple's punishment is too lenient.

The case has highlighted tension in the gulf state between its more conservative values and the more liberal outlook of the expatriate visitors who visit, live and work there.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the affair came to light, hotels in the region have been issuing guests with etiquette guides to keep them out of trouble. Tourists are urged to show discretion and minimise public displays of affection and above all avoid public drunken behaviour.

The Friday brunch is something of an institution for expatriates in Dubai. Hotels offer unlimited champagne and food from late morning for the rest of the day, which is a day of prayer for Muslims.

Obvious drunken or lewd behaviour to locals can be deeply offensive to local people.

But in addition to highlighting the behaviour of expats the case has also increased discussion of certain stringent rules at odds with Dubai's reputation as a more relaxed Arab country.

Laws ban kissing in public as well as homosexuality, and the emirate has a strict approach to certain drugs, considered everyday medicines in the West.

Even some children's cough medicines can land people in jail if found in their possession while passing through customs into Dubai.
