Microsoft's final copy of Windows 8 leaked online back in early August and pirates have been battling to work around Microsoft's activation technology ever since. Early attempts involved the use of third-party Key Management Services (KMS) servers that would activate a copy for 180 days, requiring a re-activation every six months. This work around has allowed Windows 8 pirates to use the operating system free of charge temporarily, but the software maker has now made it even easier to avoid paying for a key.

Microsoft is giving away a Media Center upgrade to Windows 8 Pro users until January 31st, and pirates have discovered that the key provided will fully activate a copy of Windows 8 that was previously temporarily activated through the KMS workaround. The blunder means pirates can download an illegitimate copy of Windows 8, temporarily activate it through KMS and then upgrade it fully to an activated copy of Windows 8 thanks to Microsoft's own Media Center upgrade offer. The Verge has confirmed the procedure works on a test machine and we have reached out to Microsoft for a comment on the method.

My Comment:
I think it is time for us software developers/companies to concentrate on making our apps affordable and user friendly than fighting hackers in Techie side.
The best fight we can do is taking the offenders to the law than making it harder for legitimate users simply because you want to "lock out" crackers!

Nmeiona hyo miez
Mm nim_edit hyo miez 6 na kuwa miez 600 so watankuta nimeisha weka na wndow nyngne (may b wndw 9)

pata picha ni wewe ndo umetengeneza software, utaiuza wapi? It is, and will still be a pain in the arse.
No wonder hatuna motivated developers coz wanajua tu kazi yao will most likely be in vain.

!

CTO, you are quite right, but doing both (red colored text) would be the best option

Counterfeit software is risky - whether you find it on the street, on the Internet, or at a low-price retail outlet that seems legitimate. Here's proof:

In an IDC study, 25% of web sites studied that offered counterfeit or pirated software also attempted to install spyware or Trojans that can compromise your systems. The estimated cost of recovering a single infected machine can be over $1,000. Read the full IDC Risks of Counterfeit report.

A Yankee Group study revealed, "When problems arise with counterfeit software, IT administrators typically require 20% to 30% more time and labor to identify and resolve the problems - at a monetary premium to the business." Read the full Yankee Group report.

In studies conducted on counterfeit versions of Microsoft® software, one in three disks could not be installed on a computer. More than 40% of the remaining counterfeit disks installed contained additional programs or binaries with known vulnerabilities.
