Leukaemia treatment 'cures' man of HIV

A bone marrow transplant has successfully cured a man of both leukaemia and HIV

An HIV positive man who received a bone marrow transplant after developing leukaemia appears to have been cured of HIV.
The American man in his forties, was living in Berlin when he developed acute myeloid leukaemia. When chemotherapy failed to treat his condition, he was given two bone marrow stem cell transplants chosen from a donor who had a natural genetic resistance to HIV.
Around one to three in every hundred people have a gene mutation which gives them a natural resistance to HIV. The virus can only infect human cells by interacting with two 'receptors' located on the surface of the cell, known as the CD4 and CCR5 receptors. However, a small minority of people with a genetic mutation lack the CCR5 receptor, making it extremely difficult for the virus to enter their cells.

The HIV patient's doctors deliberately chose a bone marrow donor with the gene mutation.
Three years on and the man is free of both HIV and leukaemia and is not being treated with anti-retroviral medicines. No trace of the virus has been found in the blood or other parts of the body where HIV can hide out such as the intestines, lymph nodes or the brain.
And all of the patient's new blood and bone marrow cells are of the HIV-resistant kind, without the CCR5 receptor.

However, as bone marrow transplants are risky and complicated procedures, they cannot be widely used as a cure for HIV.
In the journal Blood, the doctors from the Charite University Hospital, Berlin say their findings "strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved" in their patient.

It is a great achievement. Science world has been moving very fast lately. I am just wondering whether Africa is going to cope with the pace of the fast moving science world train.

My colleague next door is working on in vitro cultivation mouse's yellow bone marrow and its effects on natural killer cells. Maendeleo makubwa haya.

Full of miracles!

True but, that starts with science. Identifying individual with genetic mutation which lack CCR5 receptor and knowing these are resistant to HIV is also a miracle. But all in all science itself is a miracle that's why you can see someone playing football in Manchester via Television at the same time as the one watching it from the stadium.

We in africa have very little to benefit from this. HIV is a tricky virus. The guy is HIV free for now because of the genetic modification where he is lacking binding receptors for the virus. But once exposed he will become a carrier and infect unsuspecting victims. Furthermore, bone marrow transplant is a very risky and expensive treatment, leave alone the issue of getting a matching donor. The only thing we can benefit from is to be faithful to our partners, otherwise to use condoms consistently..

There is some projects working on vaccines, hopefully these will be cheap and easy to manage. Ila huku kwetu malaria tu imetushinda, Mungu atatuona lakini, mweh!

He won't be a carrier because tests show he doesn't have HIV in blood, Lymph or brain. Carriers are people with HIV positive but themselves are strong and healthy. This isn't the case for this guy.

Hostede.exactly what i meant, I said once exposed to HIV,he will be able to carry it in his blood and infect others.Actually i pray that he was given a contract that he must use protection always. Coz the genetic modification does not prevent him from getting HIV,but it wont bind on his cells thus he stays unaffected
