National Electoral Commission (NEC) director Rajab Kiravu
Igunga residents have been urged to maintain peace and tranquillity in the run-up to a bye-election in the constituency early next month.
The call was made by National Electoral Commission (NEC) director Rajab Kiravu when addressing political party leaders in Dar es Salaam.
We should all be responsible for maintaining peace and order in the district so that the campaigns are not tainted with chaos, said Kiravu when responding to a question about a man who was reportedly splashed with acid and the DC who was allegedly found in a compromising situation with regard to the bye-election.
Kiravu said aanot all chaotic acts in the district should be directly associated with the election campaigns.
We are aware of the man who was spilled with acid, but you should not blame it on NEC. Instead you should question the security organs in the district, he said.
With regard to the district commissioner, Kiravu said he could not comment on the matter because he was yet to be briefed on the matter by his officials on the ground in Igunga.
The meeting discussed issues that have to be done in ensuring the bye-election was carried out smoothly.
NEC commissioner Mary Longway urged party candidates and agents to observe NEC laws and help the residents to understand and follow them in order to ensure peaceful voting in October.
The commission pleads with all agents who will be appointed to understand all procedures that are to be followed at the polling stations, Longway said.
Campaigning in Igunga is expected to end on October 1, with the bye-election set to take place the following day.
