A very popular conspiracy theory that has been making its rounds on Social media recently makes a very troubling claim. According to the post, Bill Gates said that we can lower the population with vaccines, and now he is involved with developing vaccines. On the surface this seems very scary. So I decided to do some research into the subject and see how true it is. All the details of what I found is below, but first this is the original image being shared as the basis for the conspiracy theory.
Is it true :
The first thing we need to do is to confirm whether he really said this or not. According to independent fact checkers he did make this claim. He said this during a Ted Talk in 2010, long before the Coronavirus Pandemic was even a issue. This was said as he was talking about the dangers of overpopulation and how it would affect the earth. As we can see from the above image, his words were very oversimplified when it was used to fuel this conspiracy theory. Which means that things are not what they seem.
What did he actually mean :
According to independent fact checkers this is simply a case of a quote taken out of context. Something that happens all too often. The fact is that during his Ted Talk Bill Gates was trying to cover the issue of unsustainable population growth by helping the world better deal with it. This would be done with improved healthcare like vaccinations. Something that Bill Gates has worked with very heavily is sustainable population growth, in order to help stop poverty and unrest and ensure a better future for people. However what are the implications of this.
What does this mean for us :
In everything, context is very important. Taking something out of context can heavily twist it's meaning and create false narratives. This is why it's so important to fact check everything we read and find reliable sources for our information. Believing a false narrative can actually put us in danger as it stops us from getting the life saving treatments we need like vaccines. So always check that you have the right information, before spreading it.
