THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye, has promised the elderly an allowance.
Besigye, the Inter-party Cooperation presidential candidate, said the allowance would comfort the elderly such that they do not regret their diligent service to the nation.
His pledge is similar to the one made by the Government in September when it announced a monthly financial package for the poorest elderly, people with disabilities and orphans.
Suleiman Madada, the Minister for the Elderly and Disability, at the time said the government project, which would begin in Kyenjojo, Kaberamaido and Kiboga, targeted 600,000 people in 95,000 households.
Each of the households, Madada said would get sh22,000 a month, he said. The first phase would cover 14 districts.
Campaigning in the Hoima district on Tuesday, Besigye said: "Our elderly citizens are living in terrible conditions. You would expect their children to look after them, but they also abandon them for personal families.
"As a result, you find an elder living a solitary life without even a piece of soap to wash their linen. If you clock 65 years, you will be supported by our government," he added.
