Juventus and Italy international defender Daniele Rugani has tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) and is 'currently asymptomatic'.

The 25-year-old, who has started just three of Juventus' matches this season in Serie A and seven in all competitions, has found himself on the bench for the majority of the campaign so far this season.

The Turin-based club announced the news this evening on their official website following his diagnosis.

“The footballer, Daniele Rugani has tested positive for Coronavirus-COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic,” read a statement.

“Juventus Football Club is currently activating all the isolation procedures required by law, including those who have had contact with him.”

Rugani was part of the squad that beat title rivals Inter Milan 2-0 behind closed doors on Sunday at the Allianz Stadium, and posted on Instagram following the dressing room celebrations after the game.

Maurizio Sarri's side had a training session earlier today, which now means the Italian manager, his backroom staff and players have been put into quarantine.

The Italian government have suspended all matches in Serie A until April 3, and Juventus were set to face Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League next week, which will now most likely be suspended. Meanwhile, the Italian football federation (FIGC) confirmed on Tuesday that the Serie A season might not conclude due to the outbreak.

The coronavirus, which has so far struck over 12,000 Italians, killing 827 people is continuing to spread not just in Italy, but across the globe and people are reminded to take appropriate precautionary measures, such as washing hands thoroughly, as well as wearing face masks and gloves to stay protected.

Rugani, who joined Juve from Empoli in 2015, is the first Serie A player to be diagnosed with the coronavirus and an extra 196 fatalities were registered over the last 24 hours alone in the country. Hannover 96 defender Timo Hubers currently remains in quarantine and became the first footballer to contract the virus.

Following the announcement, Juve winger Federico Bernardeschi claimed he was going to self-isolate himself in the Juventus hotel to ensure his family remain protected following the spread of the virus.

Following the quarantine imposed on players of Juventus and Real Madrid CF, the following UEFA Champions League matches will not take place as scheduled.

UEFA are expected to suspend the entire tournament after Tuesday’s summit, but otherwise most Europa League fixtures are going ahead as planned today.

There was no choice when it came to two Champions League fixtures, as Juventus and Real Madrid squads are under quarantine for 14 days.

In Juve’s case, it’s because defender Daniele Rugani tested positive for Coronavirus, while a Real Madrid basketball player who uses the same training facilities as Zinedine Zidane’s men also has COVID-19.

Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League fixture at home to Real Madrid has been postponed.

The decision to postpone Tuesday’s game was made in conjunction with UEFA and follows confirmation that players from Real Madrid will self-isolate for fifteen days, after it emerged that a player from the club’s basketball team tested positive for COVID-19.

The Club sends it best wishes to the players and staff at Real Madrid’s football and basketball teams.

It was announced today that UEFA were organising a summit via video conference with representatives of the 55 members associations, boards of the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPro to discuss “European football’s response to the Coronavirus outbreak.

L’Equipe claim one decision has already been made, as UEFA are expected to announce that Euro 2020 will become Euro 2021.

The tournament is due to kick off in Rome on June 12 with Italy-Turkey, but it’s almost impossible for the various domestic seasons to conclude by then with all the postponements.

It seems inevitable at this point that Euro 2020 will have to be delayed and, seeing as it is a travelling tournament based in several different countries around Europe, it’d be wise to postpone it until next summer.

However, when it comes to the Champions League and Europa League, UEFA are allowing this evening’s games to go ahead.

According to Sky Sports UK, UEFA will propose changing the remaining two-legged ties into one-off matches to save time, which could be played on neutral turf.
