Serious shortage of desks in primary schools will now be addressed squarely following the signing agreement of a one-year partnership between Bank M and Hassan Maajar Trust Fund.The event held in Dar es Salaam yesterday aimed at providing a desk to every child in the country, to offset the shortage of about three million desks across the country.
The bank becomes the first corporate to firmly support the initiative under its corporate social responsibility (CRS) and offering 80m/- plus sponsoring a dinner gala, which will officiate ‘a desk for every child' campaign next Tuesday.The Bank M Chairman, Mr Nimrod Mkono, said during a short signing ceremony that the bank would support the initiative one hundred per cent and was happy to partner with the fund to get rid of the embarrassment for children sitting on the floor in classrooms.
"The initiative is good.The challenge ahead is to make strong, durable and quality desks that will last longer and not temporary stuff and come back for another fund raise," Mr Mkono, an advocate-cum-politician, said.The Chairman challenged politicians to think of not only winning elections, but also enabling all pupils to attend classes with comfort free from crawling on the floor in cramped classrooms.
"If each Member of Parliament contributed only 10 desks to his (her) constituency, we would have about 3,600 desks. This is a big leap toward providing pupils with desks," Mr Mkono, owner of Mkono & Co, an advocate firm, said.On her part, HMT Chairperson, Ambassador Mwanaidi Majaar, said the fund want to consolidate all desks sponsoring activities in the country to quicken the effort in two or three years.She said: "During the inception in July, we promised that within the first six months we would launch a big campaign geared to raise 3bn/- for primary school desks.
"The gala would be a platform to educate people on the importance of joining hands and provide something for the country's about 3 million pupils studying while seated on the floor.Ms Majaar said the fund would cente a region from district levels and make sure that every child sat on a desk before embarking on doing the same in the next region, until the problem was fully addressed.
"We will conduct a lottery on which region to start with at a dinner on Tuesday (December 6). The winning region will be announced and once the desks problem is over, we repeat the same procedures until all regions are done," Ms Majaar said.The dinner gala would have 100 tables and each table is expected to raise 10m/-, collecting 200m/- from selling of table tickets alone.
The money collected will go to the project. The raffling will assist on removing bias for which region should be the first.HMT's Trustee Bertha Semu Somi said since the inception of the fund, it had won considerable good will and response from corporate, Diasporas, individual well wishers inside and outside the country.
She said the gala would draw invitees from Tanzanians working with UN agencies inside and outside the country, Diasporas, Members of Parliament and some special schools such as Weruweru, Ashira and so forth."Let's we, who schooled seated on a desk contribute to this initiative," Ms Somi said.
Another Trustee and Educationist Maria Komu borrowed Mwl. Nyerere words, saying, "Tanzania shall be built by Tanzanians…it can be done play your part."The Trust is not for profit, non-partisan and non-religious with the sole purpose of helping to improve the learning environment in public schools in Tanzania.
The late Hassan was the son of Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar, the Tanzanian Ambassador to the USA and her husband Shariff Hassan Maajar.
