TheCitizen said:Feasibility study for new Bagamoyo airport starts
By Bernard Lugongo
Feasibility study for the construction of an international airport in Bagamoyo has already started.
The Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) director general, Mr Prosper Tesha, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the authority had included in its annual budget funds for the feasibility study.
Speaking during the launch of Aviation Week, Mr Tesha said the new facility would be built on a 25,000-hectare land.
He said the feasibility study was being conducted by TAA experts.
Meanwhile, Mr Tesha told the gathering that more than a half of airports under TAA were operating on loss.
Mr Tesha said some 34 out of 58 airports that it operates were unproductive, forcing the authority to use funds obtained from Julius Nyerere International Airport to support their operations.
"We appeal to the Government to help in financing operations of these airports," he appealed.
He said poor infrastructure and outdated equipment were to blame for low volume of cargo and passenger planes.
But, the Minister of Infrastructure, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa noted that the Government would continue upgrading the country's airports.
The Minister called upon TAA and TCAA to be creative in their work and improve the sector.
