Russia begins rollout of new S-500 air defence system - report​

MOSCOW, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Russia has completed tests of its new S-500 surface-to-air missile system and has started supplying it to the armed forces, the RIA news agency quoted deputy prime minister Yuri Borisov as saying on Thursday.

The S-500, a weapon Moscow hopes will beef up its own defences and become an export best seller, has been described as a space defence system and can intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles and aircraft.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov announced on Thursday that the first installation of the country’s new S-500 air defense system has begun.

Speaking to journalists, the official revealed that the next-generation weapon system has completed “state trials,” and production of the first elements of the system are now taking place.

However, Borisov clarified that there are still configurations to make in the system. The first batch of equipment entering service is not yet the full range that the manufacturer desires.
The S-500 missile system will replace the S-400 currently in use.

About the S-500 Air Defense System​

Produced by Russian state-owned defense company Almaz-Antey Concern, the S-500 is designed to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles and other aerial attacks at an altitude of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles).

The weapon system can hit up to 10 targets at a range of up to 600 kilometers (372 miles) and has a response time of three to four seconds, shorter than the S-400.

The S-500 uses the 77N6-N and 77N6-N1 missiles, which can be fitted with an inert warhead capable of destroying enemy nuclear warheads with precision.

Earlier this year, the Russian Ministry of Defense released footage showing the system’s test launch at the Kapustin Yar range. It reportedly intercepted a “high-speed ballistic target” during the event.
