An American investor has shown interest in Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), pledging to modernise its fleet if granted partnership.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Tuesday in Dar es Salaam, Managing Director of the Celtic Capital Air Co-operation, Fabian Bachrach said his company was ready to take the airline and turn it into a formidable competitor in the global airline industry.
He said Tanzania has a good and reliable market for the airline industry, because there is a growing demand for the service, taking into account that the country is among the world's prime tourist destinations.
According to Bachrach, ATCL needs to have in place modern airline facilities and a good management which would work to attract customers.
He also urged the government to seriously invest in improving ATCL's image.
"If the government of Tanzania provides adequate resources to ATCL, obviously the company will regain its status and become the leader in the country's airline business," he said.
Bachrach said the government should strive to sell an airline which is commercially viable, so that it can attract a good price.
He also cited some of the challenges that ATCL is facing as the lack of a website which makes it unable to operate efficiently in the era of globalization, where airline companies issue tickets online.
"This costs ATCL a lot of money which is paid to the travel agencies working on its behalf," he said, adding that poor management and marketing were the other key challenges facing ATCL that needed to be sorted out.
Contacted for comment, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Infrastructure Development, Eng. Omari Chambo said the government would work on the proposals to uplift the services offered by ATCL.
Chambo admitted that ATCL was facing with many challenges that had forced the government to inject huge sums of money into it to improve operations.
"We will consider all advice from investors because what we want is to make sure that the company turns into a very important catalyst of the national economy," he said.
Late December last year, five firms based in the US, the UK and the United Arab Emirates showed interest to run the cash-strapped Air Tanzania Company Ltd (ATCL).
ATCL Acting Chief Executive Officer William Hajji said that the government was determined to revive the state-owned airline through the selection of reputable aviation industry investors for the purpose.
He said negotiations had been going on with the Chinese company for quite some time, but it had become necessary "to expand the horizon and the subsequent selection of the most qualified company to breathe new life into the airline".
In January last year, the government rescued the national flag carrier from financial doldrums with the disbursement of a second bailout package to the tune of 4.5bn/-.
The firm has experienced a series of problems since its marriage with "strategic investor" South African Airline (SAA) that collapsed in 2006.
Other problems experienced included the decision by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) in December, 2008 to revoke the new-look airline's Air Operating Certificate over faulty documentation.

Nami tumaini langu ni hii...kuona Tanzania inakuwa na shirika la ndege lililosimama, na linaloleta heshima kwa nchi.

Nina mashaka kidogo kwamba kwa hatua iliyopo sasa, Serikali inaweza ku'revoke mapatano yake na waasia wa China-Sonangol, ambao wamefikia hatua ya juu ya maafikiano ya ubia na ATCL.

Hata ndani ya Bunge tayari wameshajadiliwa na kuridhiwa, hivyo sioni ni katika grounds zipi tunaweza kumwita MZUNGU wa America.

All in all, kama ilivyodokezwa awali, Tanzania ina potential kubwa sana katika sekta ya Usafiri wa anga kwa kuzingatia urithi wa kitalii ambao MUNGU aliamua kuuweka hapa kwetu, na kama lingeundwa shirika makini, basi lingejihakikishia biashara kubwa na yenye heshima.
 
Management Issue.

Its time to consider serious issues with the seriousness they require. All what we need from the foreign investors is the experience, management skills and the international business muscle required to push around various components of the system( the company-ATCL) so as to achieve our objectives at best.

The best thing we could do with ATCL is to first of all try as hard as possible to separate the company from politics. Previously we used to have Managers who thought they were appointed to their positions as a reward rather than a responsibility. When they failed to deliver we thought it was a better time to blindly sale it out to foreign investors...who also failed...i don't wanna go to details here.

Secondly, it is good to know that a publically owned Airline carrying the name of a country in a prestigious manner, is one of the best promoters of the country itself..... Just try the flavors like American Airline, Air Canada, British Airways,Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Swissair, Air France, South African Airways......its my dream to have a performing Air Tanzania and not ATCL, which will work hard to improve the image of the country all over the world.

I wish one day people looking for realiable services, affordable costs, value for money services, outstanding destinations, polite environment, business flavor, time conscious, attractive service package, sufficient networking with other service providers, and unboring travelling, that those people will find no where else but Air Tanzania at world class level.

Its also good to improve the services of our Airports and Hotels as well as all the Transport and logistics in concern so as to enhance the strength of Air Tanzania market share. If we can make a way to improve above modes of logistics and transport then probably one or some of our Airports could turn into either a destination or a connection point to many of Foreign Travellers. Our Neighbours Kenya are doing better with their JKIA and Kenya Airways.....coupled with better Transport Services from Hotels to Airport and v/v. but here we could have a better deal............

Hey ... I belive in a world class best perfoming AIR TANZANIA... ONE DAY YES...

Nilianza kwa kusema kuwa wanakodisha ndege kwa vile ndiyo biashara wanayofanya. Kama wewe unataka ndege ya kukodi, waone wao watakutafutia na kukudoshia ndege hiyo; hiyo ndiyo business model yao na kwangu mimi hiyo ni biashara ya kukodi ndege.

Nimesema huenda ana asili ya kikyuba kwa vile wakati nikiwa FAU yeye alikuwa active sana katika elemenatry schools ambazo zina wanafunzi wengi wa kikyuba wakati wanajiandaa na mashindano ya science: mimi nilikuwa mmoja wa organizers wa mashindano yale.

Hata mimi nimeliona hilo! Inavyo elekea hawa ni investor UCHWARA, kwa usemi wa mitaani! Nitashangaa sana kama serikali itababaishwa na hiyo anuwani ya Florida na kukubali kuingizwa kwenye mukenge.

Kwanini wasijaribu "tena" kutafuta kampuni ambayo ina uzowefu wa kuendesha Airline Business? Kinachotakiwa ni investor mwenye Airline experience pamoja na pesa za kupanua services za ATC na kujenga maintenance facilities na kununuwa ndege mpya. Wasihangalie vijisenti vya kununuwa tu. SAA ilishidwa, itakuwa hawa wakodisha ndege za watu yaani Middleman!

Huenda kwanza wanatumiwa na mafisadi bongo ambao watakampeni ATC iuzwe kwa bei nafuu halafu wao ndio watakawo inunuwa kwa kutumia jina la hawa investor uchwara. Wakishaipata ATC kwa bei nafuu wanauza assets zao ambazo zitakuwa na bei kubwa kuliko pesa walizotumiya kuinunuwa na kupeleka faida yako Dubai wakati wanaicha ATC hoi au kuiuwa kabisa. ,
