Champions League - Arsenal fan hangs himself
    Eurosport - Wed, 06 May 15:38:00 2009

An Arsenal fan in football-mad Kenya hanged himself wearing his beloved team's shirt after their defeat to Manchester United in the Champions League.

Like elsewhere across Africa, Kenyans pack bars for Premier League and Champions League matches, especially those involving Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Suleiman Omondi, 29, was found hanged at his home in a middle-class Nairobi estate shortly after leaving distraught from the pub where he had watched Arsenal lose 3-1 in their Champions League semi-final at the Emirates on Tuesday.

"He took some drinks and broke down in tears within the final minutes of the match," a fellow bar patron, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.

Police said they were called to Omondi's house on Wednesday morning. "What we are gathering is this suicide is related to the Arsenal and Manchester match," local Embakasi area police chief David Bunei said.

Bar attendants said they had to intervene after Omondi lunged at a man who suggested Arsenal would not recover from conceding two early goals. They also lost the first leg 1-0.

Brawls are common in Kenya during football matches and there have been other related suicides reported in the past.

The north London club was beaten 3-1 in the European Champions League semi-final second leg on Tuesday evening.

Suleiman Omondi, 29, who was watching in a bar in the capital, Nairobi, was incensed by the club's poor showing.

He left at half-time after arguing with a Manchester United fan and was found hanging from a rope in his house, still dressed in an Arsenal shirt.

    'Broke down'
The BBC's Josphat Makori in Nairobi says the unprecedented incident has shocked football fans in Kenya.

According to his friends, Mr Omondi was in good spirits at the beginning of the match and even when Arsenal conceded the first goal, he did not seem to be affected.

But things changed when the team conceded a second goal 11 minutes into the game.
A woman, who sat next to him in the bar, said Mr Omondi was so disappointed by Arsenal's poor performance that he broke down during half-time.
Another eyewitness told journalists that it was at this point that a Manchester United fan started taunting him.

"Suleiman got hold of him angrily by the neck and started pressing him so hard," he said.

"We quickly intervened and asked him to stop. Suleiman then stopped but he was so angry that he left in a rage."

His body was found on Wednesday morning.

Police officer David Bunei told the BBC the incident was being investigated.

Wenger: The most disappointing of nights

Arsene Wenger was left to reflect on the most disappointing night of his Arsenal career following the Champions League semi-final defeat to Manchester United, but vowed his young side will one day compete with the best again.

The Gunners were undone by two goals in the space of three first half minutes, which effectively killed off the tie as a contest, leaving the home side needing to score four.

"It is the most disappointing of nights," said Wenger.
"I felt the fans were really up for a big night and to disappoint the people who stand behind the team so much hurts really.

"We do not feel like we have played the semi-final of the Champions League because we were out of it after 10 minutes.

"The game was over before it started, that is most difficult to swallow.
"We can only look at ourselves I must say, but it's very, very disappointing to fight such a long way to get where we have been but to give the game away like we did."

Wenger added: "We were ready for a fight, ready for a game, but after 10 minutes it was impossible.

"We kept going and we did as much as we could, played with pride and desire, but of course some part of the belief had gone."
"Now we have to stand up for it and finish the season well and respond well against Chelsea on Sunday."

Arsenal now have little other than pride left to play for - although an unbeaten run of 21 Premier League run has given them an outside chance of overhauling Chelsea, whom they play on Sunday, for third place.
Wenger, though, maintains all is not lost and is convinced his team's time will come.

"It's easy to say that it is a bit of experience, but I am convinced that we have the quality and we will continue to develop," he said.

"If you look at the average age of the team, it is still very young.
"To reach that level deserves a lot of credit, but we were caught by a team who has the art to kill and take advantage of mistakes."

Inasemekana Jamaa alikuwa anachonga sana kabla ya mechi. Baada ya Arsenal kupigwa goli la pili aliondoka ukumbini.
