To use his own words, Anthony Joshua took another step to greatness in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley.
But how the home support were made to suffer as Wladimir Klitschko threatened to pull of a remarkable upset.
Joshua stopped his 41-year-old rival in a brutal 11th round after a battered Klitschko had twice got to his feet.
Referee David Fields had little choice but to stop the fight as Joshua continued to unload on his opponent in the corner with more than half a minute remaining in the round.
But that does not come close to telling the full story of how Klitschko silenced Wembley by sending the undefeated IBF champion tumbling in the sixth.
Klitschko had been on the canvas himself in the fifth - but mounted an incredible response to seize control of the fight and threaten to resume his place at the summit of heavyweight boxing.
Joshua looked out of energy and out of ideas.
Had he come against a younger Klitschko he may not have been given the chance to gain his second wind.
But the former champion didn’t have the gas to find another gear - and instead let the younger man off the hook.
Joshua was honest enough to admit: “I’m not perfect, but I’m trying. And if you don’t take part, you fail.
“You leave your ego at the door and give respect to your opponent.
“In terms of the boxing hall of fame and arena he’s (Klitschko) a role model and a hero."
