Suspected Somali gunmen once again raided a Kenyan border town and carjacked a private vehicle before returning to Somalia.
The gunmen, suspected to be Al-Shabaab members, entered Kenya at 7.20 p.m. on Friday and carjacked the vehicle from a petrol station after firing several rounds into the air.
The raid comes barely a month after an aborted attempt to kidnap an Italian nun in Wajir town.
Confirming the incident, North Eastern PC James ole Serian said three Somali gunmen sneaked into the country and made away with a private Toyota Hilux, Reg No KBC 862S.
He said the gunmen, who are believed to have come from Bulla-Hawa, followed the truck into a filling station where the driver was refuelling his vehicle.
"The gunmen forced the driver, Issack Adan, out of his car and fired several times into the air. They drove back to Bulla-Hawa," he said.
The PC said security personnel are on high alert along the border, and more security officers were deployed to thwart a repeat.
The recurring raids and abductions by Al-Shabaab in Mandera town have forced several international NGOs to close operations after the government failed to assure them of the security of their personnel and vehicles.
