Addis-Dar port deal: Couldn't Tanga have been a better option than Dar?

Declaration: I live in Tanga city and i have no problems if am considered to harbour bias for my port city

I am proposing that the Government considers Tanga port for the recent Ethiopian deal and not Dar as the location for this project. While I truly congratulate the Government for clinching this deal with the Ethiopian Government on the use of our Dar Port, I appeal (from a layman's view point-just in case this was discussed) that PERHAPS Tanga would be a better port for Ethiopian cargo than Dar because of the following reasons

(i) Tanga is closer to Ethiopia by Planes than Dar
(ii) Tanga Port is experienced and well known for handling huge tonnages of cargo like past sisal exports than any other port in the country, that capacity and experience was never lost
(iii) Tanga port has more internal space and potentially more spots to develop as specific ports for special groups such that Ethiopia can easily develop its own exclusive area for their imported goods without causing any inconvenience to the current port infra-structure
(iv) current technology allows the Government to increase depth of any coastal ports artificially to allow handling of big ships and Tanga is no exception, hence shallow depth of some selected spots should not be taken as critical barriers
(v) the airport in Tanga is directly connected to the port and the railway system. It will take only a diversion of 300 meters into the airport for the Ethiopian cargo terminal
(vi) the airport in Tanga is devoid of heavy international flights thus giving cargo planes from countries like Ethiopia a 24/7 activity of unimpeded cargo activity
(vii) Tanga will soon become the number one manufacture of cement in the region and this gives the location additional vantage
(viiii) choosing Tanga will ease the choke around Dar port and allow distribution of commercial opportunities to other ports
(ix) work required to upgrade the Tanga airport to accommodate cargo planes is probably justified by nature and volume of the trade to be accrued including the coming Uganda oil-pipeline

Based on these arguments i appeal that our Government considers Tanga port for a possible shift of location for this deal

Well advocated. I also appeal with the same mind especially on the point of distributing commercial opportunities to other ports. With that a huge expectations from Ethiopia, Tanga will be a good location.

Good idea, with great supporting points. It's high time for the govt to jump start the economies of our county from each and every angle/ region, making use of already existing infrastructures, instead of directing every opportunity to Dsm.

Unaweza ukawa ni mpango ndani wa sisi waTz wenyewe, kuipokea mizigo Ta na kuisafirisha Dsm au kuuboresha uwanja wa Ta ili kila kitu kifanyike Ta. Ni watu kukaa na kupanga/ kukubaliana kwa manufaa ya wote.

Nachoweza kukwambia ni kuwa kama Kisumu ni International Airport, i see little logic why not Tanga. Fika Kisumu utajua naongealea nini. Kama Tanga iliweza ku-export tonnage zote zile za katani enzi za cranes za tonnage ndogo leo ni zama za kuchimba kina cha bahari hadi meli ipaki unapotaka. Unapokosea ni kuwa Wahabeshi hawaruki from the Dar port!!!! wanaruka from the Dar airport. After all bandari ya Tanga ina more internal space ya kuwawezesha hata kujenga eneo lao exclusively na kuliwekea reli hadi airport ambapo sio mbali. Bandari zinajengwa na kupanuliwa kama Lamu (Kenya), Mwambani (Tanga) etc. Ukiwa na runway ya kutosha hapa Tanga basi hata madege kama Antonov yanaweza tua na kuondoka na mzigo issue ni kupanga tuuu.

Huko kooote kwo sio sensible, the most practicable choice kwao ilikuwa kutumia bandari za Eritrea ambazo zamani zilikuwa ni zao. Nadhani kisiasa hawaelewani. Sijui Mombasa na Lamu kuna bifu gani baina yao na Wahabeshi

kisha watatumia barabara gani kwa sababu ukiangalia geographically,,, Lamu Port.. though inajengwa, iko karibu sana na Ethiopia. ama wataka kuniambia watapitia Uganda, South Sudan,, ndio wafike Ethiopia??? hii kweli kali. naomba nifahamishwe

Unaweza kuona kwenye hii ramani kuwa hata Lamu pia sio karibu kihiiiivyo kwa hawa wahabeshi. Bandari za jirani na wao ni za Eritria (jirani na Asmara) na Djibouti. Sasa kwanini wavuke kote huko wakimbilie the MOST SOUTHERN PORT TOKA KWAO yaani Dar hamna anayejua na haituhusu. La msingi hapa ni kuwa basi kama wameamua kuja basi waleteni Tanga. Wapanue Bandari yetu na Uwanja wa ndege hadi walete midege ya Antonov. Kwani lazima mizigo yote ifikie Dar???
