Early in October this year the Tanzanian government floated the idea that it was considering selling of its massive stockpile of ivories. According to the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Lazaro Nyalandu the government (meaning had a blessing of the cabinet) was seriously considering selling over 100,000kg of ivories. This however, was not the first time the Tanzanian government had toyed with the idea. In 2010 Kikwete government tried unsuccessfully to sell over 90,000 kg of ivories in its possession. After worldwide outcry and opposition from activists and of course Kenya - the government backed down.

What is more alarming - for some of us anyway - is that only less then two months after the government had pushed again the idea of selling its ivories stockpiles two containers have been seized in Hong Kong in what I can only speculate that is probably linked to the Tanzanian ivory stockpiles. But more interesting is that the containers seems to have been shipped from Tanzania and no one in our government was able to stop the shipment until it reached its destination in the Far East.

What are the chances that the ivory seized in Hong Kong are part of the same stockpile spoken about by Nyalandu? Who is trying to sell them? Can Nyalandu assure the country that the stockpile that he was speaking about just over a month ago is still intact? If it is intact where does this massive stock of ivories originate in Tanzania? Is there someone who has been able to hold onto probably the largest stockpile of ivories in private hands? Who is he and where does he get his audacity to trade in ivory?

Kuna zilizokamatwa juzi(mwezi october) huko Hong Kong...Zimetokea Tanzania, wabongo wenye mzigo walikuwa wakidai eti container limebeba "plastic scraps",nyingine zimetokea Kenya(pengine mtandao wao ni mmoja),so inaonekana majangili bado wanapeta tu,imagine tembo wangapi wameuwawa!?Inasemekana baada ya miaka 20 tembo watakuwa hatarini kufutika duniani.

Hong Kong) (CNN) -- Hong Kong authorities confiscated $3.4 million ($26.7 million in Hong Kong currency) worth of ivory found in two shipping containers this week.
The illegal goods weighed more than 8,000 pounds, making it one of the biggest seizures of ivory in Hong Kong.
The containers arrived from Tanzania and Kenya
, according to Hong Kong customs officials. The agency seized a total of 1,209 pieces of ivory tusks and three pounds of ivory ornaments from the two containers.

Hong Kong Customs was on alert after a tip-off from Guangdong officials in China. On October 16, Hong Kong officers inspected a container from Tanzania claiming to carry plastic scrap and found $1.7 million worth of ivory. A day later, a second container from Kenya was seized with ivory valued at $1.7 million, according to Hong Kong Customs.

Seven people, including one Hong Kong resident, have been arrested by Chinese authorities in connection to the cases, said a customs spokeswoman.

Hong Kong is viewed as a transit point for the illegal ivory trade, feeding into increasing demands in China, according to a Time article published this week.

Elephants are being killed in Africa at an alarming rate as international demand soars for ivory. Much of the demand comes from increasingly affluent Asian countries, particularly China and Thailand.

The last major bust in Hong Kong occurred in 2011, when officials seized a shipment of ivory and rhino horns valued at $2.2 million in Hong Kong dollars.

My Take:Hong Kong walitonywa na wachina kuhusu hilo container,ni wazi wachina wameshajuwa uchafu wa wabongo na hivyo kila kitu watakitupia macho mara mbili mbili!

We need to know nani wanauza haya; isije kuwa ndio pesa za kujenga makao makuu ya CCM... kama hawawezi kuiba benki kama EPA.. well.. 89 Billion is very very tempting... ni kama kuweka almasi uvunguni mwa kitanda halafu kwenda kuishi kuomba omba..

We unadhani kwanini Kinana kapewa ukatibu mkuu?

Huwezi kuchoma hela moto. Na sidhani kama CITES wameagiza hivyo. Kwanza hawana mamlaka hayo. Mamlaka yao ni ku-regulate international trade in ivory and other stuff.

I just realized how slow we are at connecting things.

Hivi watanzania tunafanya nini hadi nchi inanuka uozo kiasi hiki?
Hadi inatia aibu!

Please i always dont understand Tanzanian goverment especially on issue of ivory! Does some one know in which country on earth such trade is legal!
