ACACIA mining shares suffer on reports of Tanzania investigation

maneno kuntu kabisa.

Tanzanian Government Accuses Acacia of Mining Gold Illegally

View attachment 522719

Shares in Tanzania-focused gold miner Acacia Mining are down 8 per cent after media reports about a second probe into mining in the East African country said the company had not operated legally.

A second special committee appointed by Tanzania’s President John Magufuli found that Acacia was not registered in the country, according to a report in the Citizen newspaper.

The newspaper said the committee found the company was “not in the records of the Business Registration and Licensing Agency.”

The report comes after a first presidential committee said last month it had found the value of minerals within raw concentrate at the port of Dar es Salaam to more than 10 times the declared amount. Acacia has denied that accusation and said the finding contain “significant discrepancies”.

The company said in a statement Monday it had cooperated fully with the second presidential committee. It did not immediately comment on the findings of the second presidential committee, as reported by the Citizen.

Acacia has been restricted from exporting metal concentrates from Tanzania since March when the president ordered a probe into metal exports in an attempt to capture more of the value from mining for the country.

Shares last traded down 2367p at 276.5p. They have fallen 26 per cent year-to-date
