JODHPUR: City police made the biggest ever drug haul on Wednesday when it seized 20 kg of heroin, worth Rs 30 crore in the international market, and
also arrested three Tanzanian nationals.
According to superintendent of police (city), Girraj Meena, these three men had taken delivery of the heroin from some unidentified persons in the Basni area and were about to leave for Jaipur when a police team, acting on a tip-off, caught them and seized 20 kg heroin, $3,000 and Rs 13,080 along with some currency of different other countries.
All the three were staying in the city for the past two days before capture and were coordinating with suppliers. As per preliminary investigation, they have been found to be couriers who were to collect the consignment and supply it to somebody else in Africa.
The leader of this team is Adam Godwin (41), who has a business visa and has been involved in smuggling for the past few years. He is said to have been coming to India very often. Before coming here, he had visited China, Macao, Hong Kong and Nepal. His accomplices, Adam Mohammad (32) and Umar Yousuf (25) were keeping student visa and tourist visa. Mohammad is studying computers in Mumbai whereas Yousuf has been in India for the past two months and staying in New Delhi.
According to the preliminary investigation, Godwin is associated with an international smuggler Abu Baquar from Africa, who has a network in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and other nations.
This heroin was packed in 20 packets of 1-kg each and was stuffed in two big bags. Each bag bore some marks in Urdu. On the basis of this, the heroin suspected to have come from Pakistan and was to be taken to Africa through Jaipur and Delhi. This has proved that Rajasthan is being used as a transit point for the delivery of drugs from Pakistan and Afghanistan for other countries. Assistant superintendent of police (city), Sawai Singh Godara said that this was the best and the purest quality of heroin, which is of high value and worth and was in crystal form.
The police have registered a case against the three under Section 8/21 of the NDPS act and has formed a team to investigate further.
