Young Africans who had earlier planned to leave for Comoro on Saturday for their Africa Champions League return leg match the following day in the capital Moroni, will now fly out of the country today. The club's chairman, Imani Madega, said in Dar es Salaam today that they have been forced to leave today for fear of arriving there late.
"We had earlier booked Air Comoro to fly us there, but we are worried we may delay to arrive on time for the match", he said. The mainland champions instead, will leave this evening aboard Kenya Airways flight via Nairobi and arrive in Comoro early in the morning tomorrow.
Yanga won 8-1 against the Comorian envoys Etoile d'Or Mirontsy in the first leg match played in Dar es Salaam a couple of days ago. Madega said they want to arrive in time for pre-match meeting and other CAF procedures. Air Comoros flies to Dar es Salaam twice a week - on Saturday and Wednesday.
"Though Air Comoros could have been convenient for our trip because it flies direct to Moroni, it could as well be a risk undertaking for us to leave a day before the match," said Madega. He cited an example of TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who were delayed by their flight ahead of their Confederation Cup match against Moro United of Tanzania some four years ago, when the former had to be dismissed from the championships according to CAF regulations.
"I'm not implying that Air Comoros will delay us, but we need to be careful," he said. He named the contingent to fly out today as head of delegation, Madina Lina Mhando, who is the executive member of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), as well as chairperson of the women football in Tanzania. Other officials include the club's Secretary General, Lucas Kisasa, Emmanuel Mpangala, coach Dusan Kondic, his assistant Zivojnov Srdan, team Manager Kenneth Mkapa and Elizabeth Mayemba (journalist).
Players in the list are Obren Circovic, Shadrack Nsajigwa, Amir Maftah, Wisdom Ndlovu, Nadir Haroub, Geoffrey Bonny, Mrisho Ngassa, Boniface Ambani, Athumani Iddi, Juma Kaseja and Shamte Ally. Others are Vincent Barnabas, Abdi Kassim, Abuu Ntiro, Castory Mumbala, Benard Mwalala, Jerry Tegete, Nurdin Bakari, Kigi Makasi, Fred Mbuna and Mike Barasa. The team is expected back home on Tuesday.
