Zanzibar. Amendments to the 10th Zanzibar Constitution have been a catalyst for the overhaul of the Union Constitution, the national chairman of NCCR-Mageuzi, Mr James Mbatia, has said.

Addressing a rally organized by the Civic United Front (CUF) at ‘Demokrasia’ grounds, he said many people started to pressure the government to write a new constitution after Zanzibar managed to introduce great changes in its major law last year.

He said the Zanzibar changes, which have facilitated the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) were an eye opener to Tanzanians.

He said since the two constitutions should be in harmony, there was a need to urgently write a new Union Constitution so as to reflect the changes made to Zanzibar’s.

“It is not a secret that the tenth amendments of the Zanzibar Constitution have aroused people’s attention, and they started to demand a new Union Constitution after noting that it is possible to have a law which suits requirements of the time,” he said.

He also asked Zanzibaris to disregard comments by some people that the new governance system in the Isles had killed the opposition. “Don’t listen to those who are saying that CUF has become CCM B… in fact those who are saying so are the CCM B.

Zanzibaris should maintain their unity and embrace true democracy which has proved that it works,” he said. (By Salma Said, The Citizen Correspondent
