Will Polygamy Be Legalized In USA?

Polygamy may be the next thing to be on the ballot for legalization. I must admit that when I first heard the law for same sex marriage was passed the first people I thought about are the Polygamists. It is something to think about.

HBO’s successful show called Big Love focused on a modern polygamist family who were trying to get along inside society. It was definitely a hint of what is sure to come.In the series, Bill Henrickson has three wives and eight children, who belong to a fundamentalist Mormon splinter group. Big Love explores the complex legal, moral, and religious issues associated with polygamy in Utah. Henrickson’s three wives each have separate houses beside one another, with a shared backyard. By outward appearances, he lives with his primary wife, and has two “friends” living close by, while in reality taking turns sleeping at a different house each night. Henrickson effectively balances his work, the continuing demands of his wives, and his wives’ relatives.

In real life New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan says he’s worried that the next step in the marriage debate will be another redefinition to allow multiple partners and infidelity. Writing on his blog Thursday, Dolan also lamented the anti-Catholic venom that surfaced in the gay marriage battle, saying he’s worried that “believers will soon be harassed, threatened, and hauled into court” for their convictions.

He also apologized to those in the gay community who may have been offended by the church’s stance, saying he’s honored that so many gays are at home in the Catholic Church and that his goal from the start was “pro-marriage, never anti-gay.”

A source agreed to talk with me about being a polygamist wife. “It’ not as bad as you see on TV. I am happy to be a sister wife. It was a little adjustment since I wasn’t you know… use to other women. I think it’s our time. We can get what we need and not hide who we are.”

Here are some things to understand first before you make a decision:

- When a man is married to more than one wife at a time, the relationship is called polygyny, and there is no marriage bond between the wives; and when a woman is married to more than one husband at a time, it is called polyandry, and there is no marriage bond between the husbands. If a marriage includes multiple husbands and wives, it can be called group marriage.

- There are a few faiths which allow polygamy.”Mormon fundamentalists” even though they are not a part of the LDS Church practice polygamy. In Islam, polygyny is allowed, with the specific limitation that a man can have up to four wives at any one time. The Qur’an clearly states that men who choose this route must deal with their wives justly. If the husband fears that he cannot deal with his wives justly, then he should only marry one.

- The Qur’an does not give preference in marrying more than one wife but allows it to make it easier on a woman that has no support. Islamic scholars opinion that the husband must tell the first wife if he wants to marry another. A husband must have permission from his first wife, and the first wife has the right to divorce. Polygamy, and laws concerning polygamy, differ greatly throughout the Islamic world and form a very complex and diverse background from nation to nation. Whereas in some Muslim countries it may be fairly common, in most others it is often rare or non-existent. According to traditional Islamic law, a man may take up to four wives, and each of those wives must have her own property, assets, and dowry. Usually the wives have little to no contact with each other and lead separate, individual lives in their own houses, and sometimes in different cities, though they all share the same husband.

- In the modern Islamic world, polygamy is mainly found in Saudi Arabia, West and East Africa (In Sudan it is encouraged from the president as female population is high)Few other countries including Libya, Pakistan and Morocco require the written permission of the first wife if her husband wishes to marry a second, third, or fourth wife.

If we are to give everyone the opportunity to “marry who they love”, will we give Polygamists the right to marry as well?

Najua ipo sana under ground, ila nasikia wanaoipigania wanasema kuwa kama ndoa za jinsia moja zimekubalika kwanini hii ikataliwe?

Wacha tusubiri tuone mtanange unaelekea wapi.
