    Profile: General Laurent Nkunda

Democratic Republic of Congo rebel commander General Laurent Nkunda sees himself as a guardian of the peace and the only man who can protect his Tutsi community.

But others see him as a Rwandan stooge and the biggest reason why DR Congo is yet to benefit from landmark elections in 2006 intended to draw a line under decades of conflict and mismanagement.

The government issued an international arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes in 2005.

Human Rights Watch says his troops have been implicated in numerous killings, torture and rapes.

Gen Nkunda says there is a "state of war" in eastern DR Congo and especially his home region of North Kivu.

Up to a million people have fled three-way clashes between Gen Nkunda's forces, ethnic Hutu Rwandan rebels and the Congolese army over the last year.

Although a peace deal officially ended DR Congo's war in 2002, and a subsequent deal in January to disarm rebel groups in the east, Gen Nkunda and his men have not joined the army, as former rebel units were supposed to.

His force, estimated to be several thousand strong has remained in Goma, always a potential threat to DR Congo's precarious peace.

The 17,000 UN peacekeepers in the country have never tried to move against his force, aware that disarming so many troops would not be easy.

    'Protecting Tutsis'

He fought in both the Rwandan and Congolese conflicts but first came to widespread notice when he led his forces into the Congolese town of Bukavu in 2004.

He said he was protecting Congolese Tutsis, known as the Banyamulenge, from "genocide" - an emotive word following the slaughter by Hutu extremists of some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda 10 years earlier.

Independent investigations confirmed that there had been some attacks on Banyamulenge in Bukavu, but not to the extent the general claimed.

Most local people believed it was all a pretext - his real objective was not the protection of the Banyamulenge - it was power.

Laurent Nkunda studied psychology at university, even today the gaunt 40-year-old looks studious with glasses perched on the end of his nose.

He is also a farmer. Tutsis traditionally keep cows and Gen Nkunda has a family farm in the Masisi area north of Goma, where his workers make cheese from cows milk.

But for the past 14 years he has been a soldier.

Although he was born in DR Congo, he fought with the Rwandan Patriotic Front, the rebel movement formed by Rwandan Tutsi exiles, which took control of Rwanda in 1994, ending the genocide.

After that Laurent Nkunda returned home to join Rwanda's adventures in DR Congo.

He was a commander in the Rwandan-backed Rally for Congolese Democracy (RCD) - the main rebel group which controlled most of eastern DR Congo during the five-year civil war.

He was accused of committing atrocities in 2002 as a commander in the diamond-rich town of Kisangani.

Similar charges were also made after his forces captured Bukavu.

After the RCD joined the transitional government in 2003, it looked like Gen Nkunda would have a chance to spend more time with his wife and four children.

But while other rebel units joined the newly integrated national army, he refused.

    Following orders?

It was only in 2007 that he agreed for his forces to set up "mixed brigades" with the Congolese army and then only to pursue the remnants of the Hutu Interahamwe militias who had committed the genocide in Rwanda and then fled into DR Congo, after the RPF seized power in Kigali.

Rwanda has twice invaded DR Congo, saying it wants to stop these rebel groups from staging cross-border attacks.

Some accuse Gen Nkunda of still following orders from his former comrades-in-arms in Kigali.

He, however, says that the Rwandans are only his allies.

But some observers say that Gen Nkunda's real purpose is to remind DR Congo that until it disarms the Rwandan Hutu rebels, it will not enjoy true peace.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Laurent Nkunda alias Laurent Nkundabatware or Laurent Nkunda Batware (February 2, 1967) is a former General in the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is the current leader of a rebel faction operating in the province of Nord-Kivu, sympathetic to Congolese Tutsis and the Tutsi-dominated government of neighbouring Rwanda. Nkunda commands former DRC troops of the 81st and 83rd Brigades of the DRC Army. He speaks English, French, Swahili, and Kinyarwanda.

    Child Soldiers

Gen. Nkunda strongly denies recruiting child soldiers, stating that as of 2005 he has demobilised 2,500 "young soldiers"and is still doing so, making it ridiculous to then still recruit more. His total army is estimated at 7,000 - 8,000 men.

    Personal Life

Nkunda has 6 children, his oldest son being 18[3].

Timeline of political and military career

    Rwandan Genocide 1994–1995

During the Rwandan Genocide, the former psychology student traveled to Rwanda, joining the Tutsi Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) who were fighting against the Rwandan Armed Forces (FAR), the military of the genocidal Hutu-led government.[4]

    First Congo War 1997–1998

After the RPF defeated the FAR to become the new government of Rwanda, Nkunda returned to the DRC. During the First Congo War, he fought alongside Laurent-Désiré Kabila, who successfully overthrew Mobutu.[4]

    Second Congo War 2000–2003

At the outset of the Second Congo War, Nkunda joined and became a Major in the Congolese Rally for Democracy (RDC), fighting on the side of Rwandan, Ugandan, Burundian, and other Tutsi-aligned forces (the latter are a relatively small group in the DRC, numbering between half a million to a million, but are a significant military force who live just across the border from Rwanda).

    Army career and rebellion 2007

In 2003, with the official end to war, Nkunda joined the new integrated national army of the Transitional Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a Colonel and by 2004, he was promoted to General. However, he soon rejected the authority of the government and retreated with some of RCD-Goma troops to the Masisi forests in Nord Kivu,[5] where he raised the flag of rebellion against the government of Joseph Kabila (who had succeeded his father in 2001). Nkunda claimed to be defending the interests of the Tutsi minority in eastern Congo who were subjected to attacks by Hutus who had fled after their involvement with the Rwandan Genocide. This war has come to be known as the Kivu conflict.

    Forming a government

In August 2007, the area under Nkunda's control lay north of Lake Kivu in Nord-Kivu in the territories of Masisi and Rutshuru. In this area, Nkunda:[6] established his headquarters by building necessary infrastructure and developing institutions of order. He established a political organisation known as the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP).

    2008 Nord-Kivu fighting

In fighting that began on 27 October 2008, known as the 2008 Nord-Kivu fighting, Nkunda leads Tutsi rebels who are opposing both the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo and United Nations forces of the 17,000 UN contingent in the country. It was reported that he was advancing on the city of Goma with the aim of capturing it, and the Congolese army claimed he was receiving aid from Rwanda.

The fighting has uprooted 200,000 civilians, bringing the total of people displaced by the Kivu conflict to 2 million,[8] causing civil unrest[9] large food shortages[8]and what the United Nations calls, "a humanitarian crisis of catastrophic dimensions."

In an interview with the BBC on November 10, 2008, Gen Nkunda threatened to topple the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo if the President, Joseph Kabila, continues to avoid direct negotiations.

    Religious beliefs

Nkunda is a Pentecostal Christian and says that he is devout and that most of his troops have converted as well.[12] In the 2008 documentary Blood Coltan about the real costs of mobile phones, Nkunda proudly shows a button he wears that reads "Rebels for Christ." He claims to be a Seventh Day Adventist Priest and that he receives help and guidance from American "Rebels for Christ" who visit the Congo spreading Pentecostal Christianity.

    Human rights

Throughout the years Nkunda has come under scrutiny and been accused by a number of organizations of committing human rights abuses. Nkunda has been indicted for war crimes in September 2005 and is under investigation by the International Criminal Court.

According to human rights monitors such as Refugees International, Nkunda's troops have been alleged to have committed acts of murder, rape, and pillaging of civilian villages; a charge which Nkunda denies.[15] Amnesty International says his troops have abducted children as young as 12 and forced them to serve as child soldiers.

In May 2002, he was accused of massacring 160 people in Kisangani, prompting UN Human Rights Commissioner Mary Robinson to call for his arrest following the abduction and beating of two UN investigators by his troops.[5] He has claimed that the UN have ignored the widespread attacks on Tutsis in the region as they did during the Rwandan Genocide in 1994.

Head rebel 'backs DR Congo peace'

Mr Obasanjo is mediating between Mr Nkunda and the government

DR Congo rebel leader Laurent Nkunda has told UN peace envoy Olusegun Obasanjo he will support a peace process with the government.

Gen Nkunda also said he would respect a ceasefire if the Congolese government did. Mr Obasanjo said it would take effort from both sides to keep a truce.

The rebel agreed to cease-fire monitors as long as they did not include UN peacekeepers, whom he accuses of bias.

The meeting came amid reports of fresh clashes in the east of the country.

An estimated 250,000 people have been made homeless by weeks of conflict between rebels and government troops.

The government of DR Congo's President Joseph Kabila has to date rejected rebel calls for direct negotiation.

After his meeting with Gen Nkunda in the rebel-held town of Jomba, Mr Obasanjo left for Kigali in neighbouring Rwanda which the DR Congo government accuses of supporting the rebellion.

BBC world affairs correspondent Mark Doyle reports from Goma that Gen Nkunda's support for a ceasefire is not new and some observers were surprised at how Mr Obasanjo appears to have been seduced by a man Congolese officials and human rights groups refer to as a "war criminal".

It may be that Mr Obasanjo was expecting the rebel group to be a motley collection and when he saw that Mr Nkunda's troops were a well-equipped military unit, he was surprised, our correspondent adds.

    'Two to tango'

Speaking after the talks , the rebel leader - wearing a grey suit rather than a military uniform - acknowledged that many lives had been lost in the fighting.

An estimated 250,000 people have been made homeless by the fighting

"Today is a great day for us because we were losing many men and now we have a message of peace. We should work with this mission," he said.

"We agreed to open humanitarian corridors to support the process."

Gen Nkunda says he is fighting to protect his Tutsi community from attacks by Rwandan FDLR Hutu rebels who fled to DR Congo after the 1994 genocide.

Mr Obasanjo, Nigeria's former president, told reporters the discussions had gone "extremely well".

But he suggested concerted efforts would be needed: "It's like dancing the tango: you can't do it alone."

Mr Obasanjo, who met President Kabila on Friday, said the president had not laid down conditions for talks with the country's rebels.

The UN envoy also met members of DR Congo's parliament and ambassadors representing UN Security Council members in Kinshasa on Saturday.

    Fresh fighting

In the latest clashes on Sunday, witnesses reported hearing artillery, rockets and small arms fire near the village of Ndeko, about 55 miles (90km) north of provincial capital Goma and near the strategically important town of Kanyabayonga.

UN peacekeepers protected a convoy delivering aid to eastern areas

A UN military spokesman said soldiers from Gen Nkunda's rebel force and Congolese army troops had been involved in the fighting.

In a recent BBC interview, Gen Nkunda said he wanted to take over the whole of Congo.

This was obviously propaganda, our correspondent says, but it scared many Congolese people because they, on the whole, believe that Gen Nkunda is backed by Rwanda which, though small, is powerful.

Rwanda, for its part, says Congo backs an anti-Rwandan government militia force based in the Congolese forest, our correspondent adds.

The UN says the conflict that began in August between Gen Nkunda's fighters and government forces has caused a humanitarian catastrophe.

On Friday, for the first time after weeks of fighting, UN aid workers delivered maize and lentils to some of the 50,000 or more hungry civilians in Rutshuru territory, north of Goma.

Akipeleka battle Rwanda, Nkunda atakimbia mwenyewe.

    Mwawado,

..i dont think you are serious. kama Interahamwe wanajipenyeza toka Rwanda, kwenda kushambulia Banyamulenge DRC, basi Nkunda alipaswa kuvamia Rwanda, na siyo kuleta vurugu ndani ya DRC.

..Gen.Laurent Nkunda is a war criminal. warrant ya kumkamata tayari imeshatoka.

The Blood Diamonds involved in the Congo Conflict.

Maurice Templesman is one of the top funders of Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party. Templesman was the unofficial ambassador to the Congo (Zaire) for years, but a new Israeli-American tycoon has replaced him. The CIA, the MOSSAD, the big mining companies, the offshore accounts and weapons deals-all hidden by the Western media, while the holocaust in Central Africa has claims some six to ten million people in Congo since 1996, with 1500 people dying daily. But while the Africans are the victims of perpetual Holocaust, the persecutors hide behind history, complaining that they are the persecuted, or pretending they are the saviors. Who is responsible?

For Israeli-American Dan Gertler, business in blood drenched Congo is not merely business, it is a quest for the Holy Grail. Young Dan Gertler goes nowhere-does nothing-without the spiritual guidance of Brooklyn-born Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Leibovitch, a personal friend of Condoleeza Rice. Gertler and Leibovitch are two of the principals behind a diamond mining company, Emaxon Finance Corporation, involved in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Gertler and gang won the majority rights to the diamonds from the state mining company, Société Minière de Bakwange, MIBA, found near the government-controlled town of Mbuji-Mayi, the rough diamond capital of the world.

Emaxon Finance Corp. has apparently out-maneuvered diamond competitors, especially the big rivals Energem and De Beers. Energem is one of the many shady mining companies connected to Anthony Teixeira, a Portuguese born businessman now residing in South Africa whose daughter married Congolese warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba.

The warlord's deadly battle in Congo in March 2007 was a bid between rival agents-Jean-Pierre Bemba and Joseph Kabila-to be the black gatekeeper for the mining cartels run by dynastic families like Templesman, Oppenheimer, Mendell, Forrest, Blattner, Hertzov, Gertler and Steinmetz, and for companies like NIKANOR, whose stock prices rose early in July 2006 in expectation of a July 30th "win" for Joseph Kabila.Africa Confidential called President Kabila's 2003 visit to the Bush White House a "coup" for the Israeli diamond magnates Dan Gertler and Beny Steinmetz.

    You have nailed it mkuu!

WATU HAPA WANAANGALIA HILI SWALA KWA EMOTIONS. KUNA ZAIDI YA ASKARI 17000 WA UN HUKO Congo ingawa wameshindwa kufanya lolote.

I can say, watu wakiendelea kuliangalia hili swala kwenye miwani ya kumlaumu Kagame hii conflict haiwezi kuisha kamwe. Nkunda ana legitimate concerns ambazo inabidi ziwe addressed. Kabila alisaidiwa na hawa hawa akina Rwanda na Uganda na one of the sticking issue ilikuwa kwamba Kabilaaende Kinshasa astabilize serikali kusudi rebels wa Rwanda na Uganda wawe dealt with. Wamefika Kinshasa wakalewa madaraka!

By the way Congo is just a failed state (just like many African countries). Huko Eastern Congo serikali haipo! People lets be serious..tunaongelea watu MILLION MOJA waliochinjwa na Hutu extremist...the so called International community ikiwa imekaa kimya! Where was the so called international community when Rwanda really needed them?

Hizi longo longo za SADC ni za kuhuni tuu hawana lolote....na naamini hata wao wanajua kwamba they are just wasting their time..wameshindwa kuaddress issue ya Zimbabwe ndo wataweza ya CONGO? SADC na AU wote ni wahuni tuu..hawana jipya..they cant call a spade a spade..jiulize mpaka leo wanamtetea Bashir na uozo wote wa Darfur..then watu mnasema eti...mna imani na hawa watu?

UN must take its responsibilities seriously. Unless hawa extremest wa kihutu walio Congo wawe flushed out....huwezi pata amani Kongo. Hata Nkunda ukimchukua leo..wapo watakaochukua nafasi yake..By the way..walianza akina Bizima Karaha, Kabila, Bizimana et al....

By the way Kabila kaingia madarakani 2001! show me what he has done to date! apart from whining! Mimi nimefika point.kuamini kuwa....Every man/woman with conscious...Has a RIGHT TO DISOBEY UNJUST AUTHORITY! Africa tumechoka na hawa wanafiki wanaoitwa viongozi wetu! Ghhhhhhrrrrzzzz!
