AS today marks the official deadline for suspects behind the external payment arrears (EPA) account scandal to return all the stolen funds, prominent local business tycoon Yusuf Manji, has reportedly flown out of the country under a cloud of mystery.
Manji, who is allegedly linked to the EPA scandal through the Kagoda Agriculture Limited shell company, is believed to have left Dar es Salaam on Wednesday evening for the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, in controversial circumstances.
According to widely circulating rumours, the businessman flew to the neighbouring country for emergency medical treatment.
Manji, who has previously denied any links to the Kagoda company, is claimed to have fallen ill sometime this week and was initially treated at a Dar es Salaam hospital.
However, reports started surfacing since Wednesday that he had left the country and was supposedly gravely ill.
There is still a lot of controversy about Manjis current whereabouts. Some reports suggest he is already in Nairobi, while others say he didnt leave the country because he was turned back by authorities at the Dar es Salaam airport, said a source familiar with the reports.
He added:It was also widely rumoured yesterday that Manji was gravely ill, but apparently no one could confirm these reports.
When contacted by THISDAY recently at the height of the EPA investigation, Manji dismissed reports that he was linked to Kagoda, which was the single biggest beneficiary company of the illegal Bank of Tanzania (BoT) funds, raking in a whopping $30,732,658.82 (approx. 40bn/-) through different accounts at various CRDB Bank branches in Dar es Salaam.
Well-placed sources say Manji was indeed questioned by the presidential-appointed EPA scandal probe team led by Attorney General Johnson Mwanyika over his alleged involvement in the deal.
He is believed to have either voluntarily presented himself to the probe team or was formally summoned for questioning in connection with his alleged association with the Kagoda company.
Manjis current whereabouts and medical condition remain shrouded in mystery, with public speculation rife about the real reasons for his departure in this critical period of the EPA investigation.
I dont believe he (Manji) is really sick ... it cant be mere coincidence that he would fly out of the country supposedly for medical treatment just a day before the EPA deadline expired. What if he never comes back to Tanzania? remarked a well-placed government source.
Members of the high-level EPA investigation were yesterday not immediately available to comment about Manjis reported departure.
