Wabunge Kenya wajiongeza mishahara

Hiki kijamaa kiko overly sensitive.

This is so much BS. I am at a loss for words here, I do not believe these MP's have the audacity to increase their pay and for what!!! for sleeping on the job, absenteeism, divisive politics and general sloth. Hawa ndio manyang'au (Yeah I said it) giving all hard working Kenyans a bad name. Greed greed greed. Greed and gluttony personified, Oxford and all those other dictionaries out there should change the description of greed and gluttony and just bandika the picture of a kenyan MP.
It is very annoying and appaling to read this kind of news.

My fellow Kenyans, do not be too disheartened...Just like everybody else, they will die and leave it all here. You will not see a U-Haul ikifuata hiyo hearse carrying their dead bodies. Wataziacha hapa hapa duniani.

Come 2012...they will be begging for votes doing everything (from bribing to kafara) kuingia bunge, just so they can suck the blood of kenyans kama kupe. These kupes are tenacious they do not fall of when they are full, they continue to gorge themselves mpaka they burst and even then it does not stop them, they will just patch up with bandaid and continue to suck, till they die there. That is why

Maybe we should unleash that blood drinking serial killer Onyancha on them, in parliament then lock the doors. We will be rid of this problem once and for all. Just a thought!!!

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A state appellate court on Friday sided with the Schwarzenegger administration in its attempt to temporarily impose the federal minimum wage on tens of thousands of state workers.

It was not immediately clear how the ruling would affect Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's order a day earlier to pay 200,000 state workers the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour as the state wrestles with a budget crisis...

Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta has said that Treasury has no money to accommodate the pay increase that MPs awarded themselves July 2, 2010

Kenya MPs’ efforts to award themselves a huge pay raise have suffered a setback after Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta declared that Treasury has no money to accommodate the increase.

Mr Kenyatta, who had been expected to table three bills in Parliament next week to legalise the new salaries maintained that there was no budgetary allocation to cater for the pay raise.

“The public will also recall that I presented the Budget Estimates for the Financial Year 2010/11 on 10th June 2010. These estimates do not include any additional allocations to the National Assembly for salaries and other benefits,” Mr Kenyatta said in a statement.

He said the Budget had exhausted all available resources meaning that the new salaries could only be financed either through additional borrowing or imposition of higher taxes, both of which he said would have far reaching adverse economic and social consequences.

Reduce tax burden

He reminded MPs that they had been vocal in condemning excessive borrowing and had been advising on the need to reduce the tax burden on Kenyans.

“The actions taken by Hon Members are not supportive of these noble objectives because they will trigger demands for salary increment by other sectors. Consequently, these will lead to a wage spiral, hence creating inflation and weakening our competitiveness,” Mr Kenyatta warned.

“For these reasons, we are have initiated a process to further engage the Hon Members to discuss way in which these issues can be addressed.”

The new perks were recommended by a tribunal chaired by retired judge Akilano Akiwumi.

The Parliamentary Service Commission, however, revised the tribunal’s recommendations upwards before tabling the report in Parliament for debate and adoption.

The report was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday by PSC vice chairman Walter Nyambati and adopted the same day.

Tabling the report, Mr Nyambati urged Mr Kenyatta to table before the house the bills to give the recommendations legal effect.

Had they been passed, MPs would have started enjoying their new salaries this month but Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his two deputies, Mr Kenyatta and Musalia Mudavadi would have had theirs backdated to May 2008 when they took office.

Greed

The MPs move was greeted with outrage from the civil society and Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) with Kituo cha Sheria threatening to petition Mr Kenyatta not to table the bills for debate to legalise the increments.

“We are going to present a petition to Mr Kenyatta not to present the bill and to urge him to act in the best interest of suffering Kenyans. We know he let us down when he failed to tax MPs, but we urge not to bow to MPs pressure this time,” Ms Priscilla Nyokabi, the executive Director of Kituo cha Sheria said on behalf of other NGOs.

Cotu deputy secretary general George Muchai termed the MPs’ move retrogressive while Muslim for Human Rights described it as greed.

According to the recommendations, an ordinary MP was to take home Sh1.2 million in basic salary and allowances, up from the current Sh851,000.

These included Sh300,000 basic salary, Sh130,000 constituency allowance, Sh100,000 entertainment allowance, Sh100,000 extraneous allowance, Sh150,000 house allowance, Sh366,000 transport allowance and Sh60,000 car maintenance allowance.

The balance of Sh65,000 represents the five per cent yearly increment to cushion members from the rising cost of living.

Phew!!! that was a close call. Surely are we to ensure free education OR raise MP salaries? Ngai these MP's are really greedy. No taxation and then a pay increase? Being an MP in Kenya is a very lucrative past time.

The biggest slum duniani iko KENYA.
Kama wewe unaisha kwenye SMUM,na mbunge wako anapata kisai hicho, what a shame.

Kulinganisha wabunge wa Kenya na UK it is absurd.

Typical African politicians. They piss me off! but hope for a new generation.

Kenya's Prime Minister Raila Odinga has strongly criticised MPs for voting themselves a huge pay increase.
If the rise is passed, allowances mean they would each earn up to $126,000 (£84,000) after tax, making them among the world's best-paid politicians.
"It is unfair. It is sending very wrong signals to the people of this country," said Mr Odinga shortly after his release from hospital.
He had an operation to relieve fluid on the brain last week.
The MPs' vote has aroused widespread public anger.

Without mincing words, I am totally against the idea of MPs adding salaries to themselves arbitrarily
Prime Minister Raila Odinga
The head of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions in Kenya (Cotu), Francis Atwoli, has threatened to call a one-week national strike if the hike goes ahead.
Although the lawmakers approved the 18% pay rise last week, cabinet is due to discuss it on Tuesday.
Sources told Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper that ministers were likely to reject the proposal.
With a referendum on a new constitution - supported by the majority of government ministers - only a month away, many political observers think the cabinet may drop the unpopular salary increase.
Mr Odinga said he was satisfied with his current salary and urged MPs to consider other priorities.
Under the proposed rise, the prime minister's salary would rise to $40,000 (£26,000) a month - a third more than the British prime minister earns and 10% more than the US president.
However, the increase would not come into effect until the next parliament, by which time the post of prime minister might have been abolished if the new constitution is passed.
"Without mincing words, I am totally against the idea of MPs adding salaries to themselves arbitrarily," Mr Odinga said.
The MPs' basic pay would be $44,000 (£29,000) a year. But they also have numerous perks and allowances, including $370 (£250) a day for turning up in parliament.
Average annual income in Kenya is about $730 (£490), while most of the population earns less than $1 (66p) a day.
Mr Odinga left hospital on Sunday and has been told not to resume full duties for two weeks.
He became prime minister two years ago when he joined a power-sharing government set up to end months of political violence after his supporters said he had been cheated of victory in the December 2007 elections.

Odinga is the man; Kenya had never had any politician of his caliber. People like Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Tom Mboya, Robert Ouko, Josiah Mwangi Kariuki tried but never succeeded in what Odinga is trying to do for Kenya today (if he can); he came to power when it is, kind of, too late!!

Lucky to the kenya People...they have someone to speak for them.....Poor me tanzanian.....Who will dare sayin such words when it comes to salary increments within MP's?????
