Egypt: Clerics Issue Statement Supporting Demonstrators

A group of Egyptian clerics has issued a statement of support for the demonstrators and called for the government to heed their demands, Al Jazeera reported Jan. 28. Safwat al-Zayyat made the statement on behalf of 36 clerics including Sheikh Muhammad Imaraha, Sheikh Safwat Hijazi; Sheikh Hafiz al-Salamah, leader of the popular resistance in Suez; Sheikh Ahmad al-Mahallawi; and Sheikh Jamal Qutb urging Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to dismiss the parliament and Shura Council, amend the Constitution, and hold free and fair elections. The statement also praised police for safeguarding the country and urged security forces not to fire on demonstrators, while adding that those who have fired on demonstrators should be brought to justice.
