Venezuelans streamed to the polls, President Hugo Chavez said Sunday he will accept the results of the country's election, whether he wins or loses. "We'll respect the results, whatever they are," he told reporters after casting his vote in Caracas. He also said voters were turning out in massive numbers in Sunday's election.

The Venezuelan leader is running against opposition leader Henrique Capriles in a vote widely viewed as the toughest electoral challenge of Chavez's nearly 14-year-old presidency. Chavez was greeted at the polling center by American actor Danny Glover and Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize laureate Rigoberta Menchu.

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavezwon re-election on Sunday, quashing the opposition's best chance at unseating him in 14 years and cementing himself as a dominant figure in modern Latin American history.
The 58-year-old Chavez took 54.42 percent of the vote, with 90 percent of the ballots counted, to 44.97 percent for the young opposition candidate Henrique Capriles, official results showed.
Chavez's victory would extend his rule of the OPEC member state to two decades, though he is recovering from cancer and the possibility of a recurrence hangs over his political future.
Jubilant supporters poured onto the streets of Caracas to celebrate the victory of a man who has near-Messianic status among Venezuela's poor, and there was relief too among leftist allies around the region - from Cuba to Bolivia - who rely on his oil-financed generosity.
"I'm celebrating with a big heart," said Mary Reina, a 62-year-old Chavez supporter who lives in the hillside slum where the president cast his vote.
"Chavez is the hope of the people and of Latin America."
Chavez fans partied and set off fireworks in the streets.

Hugo Chavez's supporters are celebrating another six years in office for their leader

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has won a fourth term in office after defeating opposition leader Henrique Capriles, electoral officials say. Mr Chavez won 54% of the vote, the country's electoral council announced. Noisy celebrations among Chavez supporters erupted across the capital Caracas following the result.

Turnout was more than 80% and voting was extended beyond the official closing time at some polling stations which still had long queues. Electoral council president Tibisay Lucena announced that with 90% of votes counted Mr Chavez had taken 54.42% of the vote with Mr Capriles on 44.97%. Mr Capriles congratulated President Chavez but told opposition supporters not to feel defeated.

"I want to congratulate the candidate, the president of the republic," he said at his campaign headquarters. He added: "We have planted many seeds across Venezuela and I know that these seeds are going to produce many trees."

Jubilant supporters massed outside the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas to celebrate. "I'm celebrating with a big heart - Chavez is the hope of the people and of Latin America," said Chavez supporter Mary Reina. At the Capriles' campaign headquarters, some opposition supporters were in tears at the news.

Mr Chavez, 58, was diagnosed with cancer last year but says he is now fully recovered. He has been in power since 1998 and said he needed another six-year term to continue his "Bolivarian revolution" towards socialism. During his time in office Mr Chavez has nationalised key sectors of the country's economy.

Venezuela is a major oil producer and high oil prices have allowed his government to fund health-care, education programmes and social housing. In his campaign, Mr Capriles, who headed a coalition of 30 opposition parties, said the president's policies had led to bureaucracy, inefficiency and shortages.

    My Take
