A Kenyan has sued his former college and its athletics coach for allegedly forcing him to drink blood four years ago.
Mr Charles Ngetich filed a suit against Central Connecticut State University and retired track coach Mr George Kawecki last Thursday alleging he was subjected to three years of racism.
Mr Ngetich was allegedly forced to drink blood before being kicked out of the athletics team. He lost his scholarship and was dismissed on September 4, 2009
Scholarship
The former athlete is now seeking damages of at least Sh1.2 million ($15,000). Mr Ngetich joined the US university on a scholarship but left after what his lawyer describes as an awful initiation ritual.
The lawyer, Ms Josephine Miller, says in 2005 the coach told Mr Ngetich he would like to see him drink blood. Mr Ngetich thought he was joking and declined but two weeks later, Mr Kawecki approached him again, saying he had seen a documentary about a Kenyan group that drinks blood for rituals.
At a track team meeting... Kawecki produced a cup of blood, told (Ngetich) he was too thin, needed calcium and demanded that he drinks it. Because of the undue influence, (Ngetich) believed he had no option and did so in the presence of about 10 team members, the suit says.
Other allegations include an incident where Mr Kawecki pointed to a puppy and asked Mr Ngetich how many people he could feed with it. And in 2007 at a barbecue at Mr Kaweckis house, someone dropped a hotdog and an unnamed teammate suggested giving it to Mr Ngetich since hes from Africa Charles can eat that.
The coach is also said to have pressured the young athlete to switch his major from maths to engineering, saying there was no use for a maths degree in Africa.
Ms Miller says the student became depressed and his performances suffered and he was kicked out of the track team in 2007 and his scholarship cut by 40 per cent. Ms Miller said her client was eventually dismissed as he could not pay outstanding fees.
