VODACOM Tanzania has injected 45m/- in sponsoring the Union Cup soccer tournament scheduled to kick off on April 26.

Vodacom Tanzania sponsorship manager Emillian Rwejuna told reporters in the city yesterday they have decided to sponsor the Union Cup so as to nurture talents and enable Tanzania have sportsmen who will represent the country well at international level.

’’The sponsorship comprises sports gear as well as monetary support,’’ he said. Sports gear includes football, traveling bags, T-shirts and caps.

’’The monetary support include prize money for the winners, transport expenses for the participating teams and expenses of the organizing committee,’’ he said.

The winners will get a trophy and 2m/-, the runners-up will also receive a trophy and 1m/- while the best player will pocket 300,000/-, according to Rwejuna.

The tournament normally takes place in April every year to mark the Union Day.

’’It normally kicks off in mid-April and ends on 26 to coincide with the climax of the Union Day celebrations. But this year it will start on April 26 at Mufindi in Iringa Region where it was founded in 1996,’’ Rwejuna said.

The Union Cup has been involving teams from the Mainland and Zanzibar, which compete on a league basis but more teams have been included this time.

’’To make the competition more challenging, we have decided to include more regions which will be divided into three groups � two from the Mainland and one from Zanzibar, Rwejuna said.

He said the first group would comprise teams from Mbeya, Rukwa and Ruvuma, the second group will have teams from Iringa region and the third group will consist of team from Zanzibar.

’’The finals will be between the winners of the two Mainland groups which will have played home and away matches and the winners of the Zanzibar group,’’ he said.

Vodacom Tanzania also sponsors the Mainland Premier League, Miss Tanzania beauty pageant and various other sports competitions.

Meanwhile, the African Nations Championship (CAN) first round, first leg match between Tanzania and Uganda will be held at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza on May 3.

A senior official of the national soccer governing body said yesterday national coach Marcio Maximo would name his squad on April 24.


He said entrance fees for the match would be 20,000/- and 5000/-.

Tanzania qualified for the first round after eliminating Kenya 2-1 on aggregate in the preliminary round.
