An underwater tunnel connecting Tanzania mainland to Tanzania Zanzibar is in the offing. The tunnel, which is scheduled to be operational come 2030, will carry high speed passenger trains, roll-on/roll-off train ferry service for motor vehicles (cars are ferried across on train wagons) and international freight trains. The tunnel is part of the East African Railway master plan, will be around 50km long and is estimated to cost in excess of $10bn.
NB: there is no such project underway and this is all purely a product of my imagination! I however do think that it should be done, to cement the tie between Zanzibar and Tanganyika, for it will allow free movement of people and goods between the two, and will also boost tourism in the country (it will be Africas first). All in support please like!
