By that time all reserves should be stripped dry!!

    Damn!!

Wapo wataalamu wengi wanaoweza kuzisimamia project hizo to fruitation.
Probably we do not have political will or we are obsessed with ufisadi stories to the point that we dont think about development issues any more. So SAD!!

Kenyan onion buyers bar Tanzanian farmers from reaching EU market

Onion buyers from Kenya have conceived a trading syndicate with an eye to exploit farmers in Lake Eyasi sprawling delta in Northern Tanzania.

Onions is the leading cash crop in the 1,000 sq km productive basin located nearly 60 km south west of Karatu District in Arusha Region.

The fertile delta accounts for a third of East Africa's Bombay Red and Red Crole onions whose small holder farmers earn nearly 2.7bn/- annually. The income directly supports 28,000 people in the area.

The new Kenyan trade syndicate entails buyers to work in coalition to control, but precisely keep low, the initial buying prices of local onions.

"Kenyan onion traders, of late have formed a tight network complete with spying agents," said Ramadhan Sunuku, the Secretary General for Mang'ola Onions Saccos.

Sunuku said as soon as the local farmers harvest their crop, the Kenyan 'buyers' pass the 'news' to one another, resulting in an onion purchasing cartel!

"These Kenyan buyers are the ones who control the onion market as they determine the price at their will," Sunuku said, adding that they normally offered them the lowest prices possible irrespective of the quality of the onions.

"When the farmers decline to accept the first offer, the dealers syndicate comes up with another offer, but not necessarily an attractive one," he said.

Sources close to onion traders say that the onion pricing could fetch up to 160,000/- per bag in the local markets, but the Kenyan dealers could only offer between 65,000/- and 70,000/- per bag.

"We are compelled to accept the price because there is no other alternative, taking into account that onions are perishable produce, the more you delay to sell, the more the quality depreciates," Sunuku lamented.

"Most of us have no idea of potential markets in Arusha and Nairobi because we are ignorant of the market there," said Maganga Iranghe also a farmer.

He said only the Kenyan 'buyers' held the key to the outside markets.

"This year they offered us only 65,000/- per bag, compared to last year where they kept the prices much lower between 5,000/- and 20,000/-" said Phillemena Mushi.

However, Baray ward leader in Eyasi, Thomas Darabe differed with the farmers, saying Kenyan traders were the saviors because they stabilised onion prices in Lake Eyasi delta.

"I beg to differ with the farmers. Take my words, without Kenyan traders here, all onion yields would have been rotting in our hands," Darabe said.

Contacted for comment, Lake Eyasi Division Executive Officer Laanyuni ole Supuk confirmed that unfair trade existed.

He said the practices denied thousands of small holder farmers rightful income.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Kenyan buyer refuted the claims that such a cartel existed, saying the allegations against them were fabricated by local middle men with an intention to provoke the government to kick them out of business.

Sources said that Lake Eyasi delta's organic onions were in high demand and fetched lucrative prices in European Union markets, but only Kenyan traders had successfully managed to penetrate the market.

Available statistics show that nearly 75 per cent of the entire organic onions production is purchased by Kenyans.

Upon arriving in Nairobi, the value is usually added to the produce like packing and branding, ready for export to the European market as Kenyan product.

Two years ago the deputy minister for Water Development and Irrigation, Christopher Chiza, visited Lake Eyasi delta and pledged that the government would make all means necessary to support, not only onion production, but also search for markets of the crop outside the country.(!!!!!!mmhhhh, Kweliii???)

The Deputy Minister said although Kenya was the preferred market, its traders could be exploiting the onion farmers because they were paying them what he described as "peanuts".

    Sikonge,

I concluded that studies have been made but as with many studies of this magnitude it is probably gathering dust and/or cobwebs in some office at TANESCO HQ!

duh ama kweli - wakenya wanatuzidi kila kitu hadi aibu - na hili shirikisho limeiva basi tutaishia kufanya kazi kwenye mashamba yao ya maua watakayokuja kuanzisha.

sasa hivi naambiwa wanajenga mega watts 1000 juhudi zao wenyewe. Barabara ya juu tayari inajegwa - kweli CCM wanatubemenda kimya kimya.
