Wadau: Jeneral tena leo, katoa hii kali kuwapasha magamba. Angalia (kwenye highlight in red) anvyowakejeli vijana wanaoingia katika chaguzi zinazoendelea katika chama cha magamba – kwamba haamini iwapo watatoa msukumo mpya na matumaini mapya kwa chama, bali kuna kila dalili watajikita katika kuendeleza tumufisadi ili wa-catch-up na hao wazee waliowatangulia.

CCM polls: Young or old, everyone’s looking for a vehicle to take them to State House

    By Jenerali Ulimwengu

Intrigue, subterfuge and chicanery have once again been on display in Tanzania as the ruling party runs elections meant to renew its leadership structures.

Party cadres have been crisscrossing county and ward, wooing, promising and cajoling, rooting for their favourite candidates.

Early results suggest that a number of prominent politicos have bitten the dust, and that new and younger faces have emerged to take their places, but one suspects that the more things change in this party, the more they remain the same.

Noises have been heard to the effect that the young crop of “leaders” signifies a passing of the torch, engendering a new dynamism within the ruling party, but is the mere fact of youth sufficient to cause renewal?

Semantically, of course, even youth can be corrupted, and there is no worse corruption than the corruption of a young, energetic and predatory cohort in a hurry to catch up with its corrupted elders.

For, what upbringing can one expect these young pretenders to have had when they have grown up under a systemic kleptocracy that has tainted everything it has touched?

It is well known that our parties — and this is not a preserve of Tanzania alone — are completely shorn of any philosophical or ideological convictions, and that they are mere arrangements put in place and maintained for the sole purpose of winning and/or keeping state power.

In one neighbouring country, people unashamedly — but honestly — declare in the open that they are looking for a “vehicle” to take them to State House.

This has invariably meant party hopping and revolving doors where top leaders of parties abandon their current vehicles to jump onto new ones that seem to have more fuel and greater traction.

A sense of betrayal of the people who clambered onto the abandoned vehicles following their “leader” is apparently irrelevant.

We can expect party hopping too, when we enter the final lap going into the 2015 elections, which have cast a long shadow on the current intra-party elections.

These elections and the attendant campaigns have been largely informed by the coming general election as presumed presidential aspirants have deployed their proxies in the districts in a bid to ensure big numbers in the structures when the the party’s presidential candidate is chosen sometime in the middle of 2015.

These proxies have been at each other’s throats and the rivalries seem only to intensify, with reports of guns having been drawn when arguments have gone toxic. Not so strangely, CCM has failed to rein in these manifestations of love for the party.

Come 2015, a decision will have to be made, and a number of aspirants are likely to be very sore because the bad blood that has arisen between them will lead to fears that their victorious rival will do them in once he or she gets into power, and this may mean that they decamp to other parties seeking their own “vehicles” to take them to State House.

That is when the party hopping “a la tanzanienne” is likely to happen.

For, you see, the presidency seems to be the be-all and end-all in our politics. It is as if one cannot serve one’s country unless one is president, or a politician for that matter.

It is also as if anyone can be president — which is true, by the way — even if one cannot do anything else to earn a living. The thinking seems to be, if you fail to earn a living in anything at all, try running for president.

That is the mouse that is gnawing at the heart of the ruling party, a veritable broad church that has assembled all manner of disparate opportunists with no ideological affinity, who believe only their man or woman will do.

What they intend their man or woman to do once in State House remains top secret, but we may surmise that at the top of the agenda will be the improvement of the personal lives of the ground troops that laboured so assiduously to enthrone him or her.

He has freedom that is the bottom line.

Duh, Mkuu, punguza povu! Unampakazia Jenerali, sifa nyingi uliombabikizia siyo kweli kabisa. Unaleta kama ile methali inayosema 'Give a dog a bad name and then hang him.'
