Incidents of setting bars on fire in Zanzibar have gone on unabatted after two more were torched in West Urban and Unguja South regions.
The latest incidents make the number of bars that have so far been torched to reach six in a period of just one month, sending a wave of fears among owners of joints that sell alcoholic drinks.
Acting regional police commander for West Urban region Ahmada Abdalla confirmed the occurrence of the incidents, saying the police had launched investigations into the incidents.
He said bars which were torched in the region include Festa bar located at Bububu Kitosani and Lukenge bar located at Jang'ombe Urusi.
He said some unidentified people set Festa Bar on fire on March 12, this year, in the afternoon, causing a huge loss to the proprietors.
Ahmada said another arson incident occurred on the same day after unidentified people set Lukenge bar on fire, causing a loss estimated at more than 1m/-, after a section of the roof got destroyed by the fire. He said all the bars were thatched with dry coconut leaves.
He said Lukenge bar is owned by Simon Benedict Kunambi, while the proprietor of Festa bar is Mussa Suleiman Paulo, both residents of Zanzibar.
He said no one had so far appeared in court in connection with any of the arson incidents.
"So far the incidents of torching bars have reached five in West Urban Region, and we're yet to arrest or take anyone to court in connection with the incidents," he said.
Other bars that were set on fire by arsonists include Peace and Love, located at Chumbuni; Migombani bar located at Stone Town and another bar located at Mwanyanya, on the outskirts of Zanzibar .
"We will continue to search for those who took part in the incidents and take them to court," he said.
However, he said it was time the Zanzibar liquor law was reviewed in order to minimise misunderstanding between the proprietors of the drinking joints and the communities in which the joints are located.
