Hivi inakuaje wabongo wengi sikuizi wameacha kutumia majina yao ya ukoo (kibantu)? Labda nakosea, lakini nilivyoku primary miaka ya sabini, sikumbuki wabantu kujiita "John Lucas", "Peter Alfred", "Maria Moses" n.k. Hapa pia nawakosoa hata wale wabantu wanao jiita "Amina Abdallah" au "Jabir Mohammed".
Sawa unaweza kuwa mkristo au muislamu, lakini jina laukoo lakibantu kwanini ulitupe??
I may be too much of an "African fundamentalist, but I think jina la ukoo (au la kikabila, au la familia) lina make a strong connection to where you come from - your history, your culture, your people,etc. Unless I see you face-to-face, I think if you tell me your name is "Beatrice William", I will automatically assume your European! Sorry, but I have yet to meet a white European with a name similar to kinjekitile or Mwamseka…
What are we becoming? Yes, we should take from other cultures that which will help us better ourselves, but let's not dwell on those attributes that will disconnect us from our land. Remember our ancestors (and especially here in East Africa) worked this land for centuries…
