TRA bows to political pressure over Dowans''
FROM:http://www.thisday.co.tz/News/6500.html
POLITICAL influence and interference is said to be behind a move made by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to rescind a decision to confiscate Dowans assets to compel the company pay a debt of 9,120,611,746/- taxes., including its gas-fired turbines seized on Tuesday,
Investigations by THISDAY have established that after TRA seized Dowans properties on Tuesday, including its gas-fired turbines, a meeting was held between TRA and Dowans top officials for hours.
Influence played a major role towards the change of decision by TRA to seize the Dowans assets until the company settles the debt, an informed source who preferred anonymity told THISDAY.
The source further said that TRA had the right to collect taxes particularly on those customers who have defaulted paying for a long time, but surprisingly, after making such a decision the tax collecting instrument received an order from above to withdraw its decision.
The inside source stated further that after a long meeting between TRA and Dowans, which was said to be politically motivated, another order was issued by the TRA to its agent to release the seized properties and be handed back to Dowans and on the the same day, the properties were handed back to the company.
The properties were seized by TRA agent, Majembe Auction Mart, on the grounds that the company had not remitted 9,120,611,746/- in taxes to TRA.
Some of the seized properties include eight containers used to store fuel and other equipment.
The properties were seized on ground that if the power company fails to settle the debt, the seized properties would be auctioned after ten days from today.
