    Mussa Juma, The Citizen
    Correspondent
Arusha. About half a million people
in Arusha Region face an acute food
    shortage because of poor harvests
at the end of the current farming
season, it was announced here at
    the weekend.
At least 24,280 tonnes of food will
    be needed to feed families
    contending with shortage of food
between now and July this year, the
    regional consultative committee
    (RCC) meeting here was told.
A report on the food situation in
    the region indicates that 508,831
people will face a food crisis and
that all the districts, including the
    Arusha municipality, would not be
    spared.
In Arusha, 23,779 people will be
affected and would need at least
1,141 tonnes of food until August,
    while 3,712 tonnes would be
    needed for 77,343 people in
    Ngorongoro District.
Food crisis will also hit Karatu and
    Monduli districts where 162,954
    and 60,000 residents respectively
    will need assistance. However, the
report could not indicate how many
tonnes have to be sent there for
those without food in the two
    districts.
    Meru, Arusha and Longido districts
    would need 3,000; 2,000 and 3,744
    tonnes of food respectively, the
    report says, adding that the
    government has already distributed
    18,733 tonnes of maize and
    disbursed some Sh595 million to
    cover the distribution cost.
    Speaking at the meeting, the
    regional commissioner, Mr Magesa
    Mulongo, called on the district
    commissioners to monitor the food
    situation closely so that the
    government can act immediately
    on the crisis.

Mbeya wakulima wanalia, vyakula vinaozea ndani hawana pa kuuzia! Kinachohitajika ni kusafirisha kwenda kwenye mikoa yenye upungufu.

Why abusive language to your fellow JF member? After all, Tanzania is a sub saharan country where hunger, poor governance and poverty in the midst of wealth are very common. On the other hand, Nairoberry has to note that Tanzania is a huge country with a lot of potential.

Has he been to Morogoro, Ruvuma, Mbeya, Sumbawanga, Iringa etc? These are truly breadbasket areas. Food shortage in Arusha region shall be addressed by the surplus harvest from these areas. This idea is basically refered in economics the theory of comperative advantage, that is the ability of a person or a country to produce a particular good or service at a lower marginal and opportunity cost over another. Nairoberry, this is a trading opportunity for you. To be successful in this line of business you need a working capital, appropriate networks and supporting infrastructure such as reliable transportation system.

he.he.he.. Them CCM diehards...may you allow me to say that your denial is in view of the hunger being man-made as opposed to being a natural occurence. Mwasambaza chakula when you need to, yet the articles says the area affected is in "dire" need

listen to what you speak and come loud again. Celebrating human suffering manifests in many forms, no nation is perfect and i hope Tanzania never gets a calamity, only then will you realise that the govts in Africa are reactive rather than proactive.

Again, SISI, NYINYI, WAO - Aghrrrrrrrr!

Hii ina maana food shortage might not necessarily mean absence of food in the country but something else.

Ripoti kama hii si ya kwanza kuhusu Hunger that is man made huko rural tanzania.

Mtoa post hii nimeona ametoa comment as if TANZANIA she's in a dire straits kuhusu CHAKULA - na hii anaifanya kimaksudi tu sijuhi tatizo lake ni nini? Vitu vya kawaida tu vinavyo husu Tanzania yeye huwa na kawaida ya kuongeza HEAD and a TAIL - we angalia remarks zake baada ya kupost huzi huu, mtu wa ajabu SANA!

Labda niongezee kitu: "who owns CITIZEN newspaper?"
